Jesse Marion Bagwell1

     Jesse Marion Bagwell was born on 11 January 1869 in Strawberry, Lawrence County, Arkansas.1 He was the son of Andrew Jackson Bagwell and Elizabeth Brickey.1 Jesse Marion Bagwell married Mary Ellen Whaley on 31 March 1891 at Baxter County, Arkansas. Jesse Marion Bagwell died on 8 October 1941 in Izard, Arkansas, at age 72 Calico Rock Progress, Calico Rock, Arkansas, October 17, 1941:

Funeral Held Friday

Funeral services were held Friday, October 10, for J. M. (Jesse) Bagwell, who died at his home here Wednesday. Services were conducted by Rev. D. E. Steely and interment was in the Katy cemetery, near Culp.

Mr. Bagwell was born at Strawberry, Lawrence County, Ark. He was 72 years, 8 months and 27 days old.

On the 31st day of March 1891, he was married to Miss Ella Whaley. To this union thirteen children were born, eleven surviving, two having preceded him in death several years ago.

In 1909 he united with the Missionary Baptist church of which he was a very active member. He has lived in and near Calico Rock all his life.

Surviving are: his widow and children, Mrs. Fannie White, Ranger, Texas; W. S. Bagwell, Culp, Ark; Mrs. Julia Teague, Culp, Ark; Mrs. Minnie Fletcher, Cartney, Ark; Mrs. Eula Pinkston, Shoffner, Ark; Mrs. Beulah Branscum, Culp, Ark; Alvin Bagwell, Chicago, Ill; Haywood Bagwell, San Antonio, Texas; Willard Bagwell, Detroit, Mich; Mrs. Mattie Neldon, Auvergne, Ark; and Lee Bagwell, Texas City, Texas. Also two brothers, Jack and Jim Bagwell, Tupelo, Ark; and two sisters, Mrs. Etta Coats, Flippin, Ark; and Mrs. Hester Wyatt, Culp, Ark., Thirty–four grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and a host of other relatives who mourn his passing.

Pall bearers were: Jesse A. Jeffery, Frank Killian, Jewell Stevens, F. E. Stoner, Henry Berry and Tom Marchant. He was buried at Curtis, Izard County, Arkansas.

Andrew Jackson "Jack" Bagwell died on 13 December 1945 at age 75. He was buried at Eight Mile Cemetery, Beedeville, Jackson County, Arkansas.

Mary Ellen Whaley

     Mary Ellen Whaley was born on 1 October 1876 in Izard County, Arkansas. As of 31 March 1891,her married name was Bagwell. She married Jesse Marion Bagwell, son of Andrew Jackson Bagwell and Elizabeth Brickey, on 31 March 1891 at Baxter County, Arkansas. Mary Ellen Whaley died on 22 February 1944 in Calico Rock, Izard County, Arkansas, at age 67 Married Jesse M. Bagwell on March 31, 1891.

Mrs. Ella Bagwell Dies Following Long Illness

Mrs. Mary Ella (Whaley) Bagwell died at her home at this place, Tuesday night, February 22, at 10:20 o'clock. Her death was not unexpected, as she had been seriously ill for several weeks. She was 68 years, 4 months and 21 days old.

She was born in this county October 1, 1875 and practically all her life was spent within a radius of a few miles of Calico Rock. After many years residence at Culp, she and her husband, the late Jese M. Bagwell moved to Calico Rock about five years ago. Mr. Bagwell's death occurred in October of 1941.

Mrs. Bagwell was converted in early girlhood and united with the Baptist church. She lived a devout Christian life until called by death. She was the mother of thirteen children, eleven surviving, as follows: Mrs. E. C. White of Ranger, Texas, Bill Bagwell, Mrs. A. W. Teague, Mrs. Minnie Fletcher, Mrs. Albert Branscum and Mrs. Willie Neldon all of Calico Rock; Mrs. Wheeler Pinkston of Winters, Calif., Haywood Bagwell of San Antonio, Texas; Willard Bagwell of Detroit, Mich., Alvin and Lee Bagwell of the U. S. Navy. Also surviving are 36 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren, four brothers and one sister and a host of other relatives and friends to mourn her passing. All the children are present for the funeral except Alvin and Lee.

The funeral will be held today (Friday) at 3:30 p.m. with Rev. J. C. Wilcox in charge of the services. Burial will be at the Katy Cemetery, near Culp. Arrangements are in charge of the McGuire Funeral Home.

     Earnest Claud White was born on 14 January 1891 in Arkansas. He married Fannie Elizabeth Bagwell, daughter of Jesse Marion Bagwell and Mary Ellen Whaley, on 14 February 1921. Earnest Claud White died on 31 July 1968 in Eastland County, Texas, at age 77.

William Shelby Bagwell

     William Shelby Bagwell was born on 31 October 1894 in Baxter County, Arkansas.1 He was the son of Jesse Marion Bagwell and Mary Ellen Whaley. William Shelby Bagwell married Hazel Galloway in 1915 at Arkansas. William Shelby Bagwell married Audrey Gertrude Emmett after 1925. William Shelby Bagwell died on 17 November 1976 in Cashmere, Chelan County, Washington, at age 82.1 He was buried at Cashmere Cemetery, Cashmere, Chelan County, Washington.1

Born in Greenville County, she was a daughter of the late William Edgar and Rebecca Suddeth Nalley, and a member of Beaverdam Baptist Church. She was a homemaker and Mother.

Survivors: Husband, Earl Waldrop, of the home; a daughter and son-in-law, Kim and Gig Minor, of Terra Alta, W.Va; a daughter, Rebecca Moon, of Richmond, Va; a son, Kris Bagwell, of Houston, Texas; a son and daughter-in-law, Jay and Reva Bagwell, of Rosemont, W.Va; 5 grandchildren and spouses, James and Deb Minor, Kimberly and Ben Glover, Cody Oliver and J.T. and Brittany Bagwell; 5 great-grandchildren, Tina, Jimmy, and John Terry Minor, and Megan Moore and Josh Glover; a sister, Alma Booth, of Greenville; a sister-in-law, Rena Bagwell; four stepchildren and spouses, Wilton and Frances Waldrop, Jerry and Joan Wade, Wallace and Betty Waldrop and Jimmy and Pat Waldrop. She was blessed beyond measure by many beloved nieces, nephews, in-laws and friends. She was predeceased by a loving husband, Harmon J.T. Bagwell; 2 sisters, Hazel Eakins and Grace Foister; and 3 brothers, Clyde Nalley, Nuggett Nalley and D.D. Nalley.

Memorials may be made to Meals on Wheels of Anderson County.

Graveside Service: 3 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 27, 2002, at Greenville Memorial Gardens.

Visitation: 6 to 8 tonight at Thomas McAfee Funeral Home, Northwest.
