Alice Louise Bagwell Stepp, formerly of Hendersonville Road, died on Thursday, Sept. 6, 2007.

She was born in Henderson County and was the daughter of the late Walter D. Bagwell and Myra Jane Youngblood. She was preceded in death by her husband, Hubert Stepp; daughter, Janie Conard; son, Jack Stepp; and four sisters and five brothers.

She retired from CTS Corporation and was a member of Fletcher First Baptist Church, where she taught Sunday school for many years.

She is survived by a daughter, Mary Ruth Elingburg, and husband, Charles, of Arden; daughter-in-law, Millie Stepp, of Fletcher; four grandchildren, Lisa Seaborn, Sherry Owenby, Mike Conard and Gregg Stepp; seven great-grandchildren.

The funeral will be held at Fletcher First Baptist Church, with the Revs. Roy Waldroup, Harold McKinnish and Terry Bagwell officiating.

Burial will follow in Hoopers Creek Baptist Church Cemetery.

Groce Funeral Home at Lake Julian on Long Shoals Road is in charge of arrangements.

Dan H. Bagwell, 96, passed away Friday, December 21, 2018 at the Memorial Campus of Mission Hospital.

A native of Henderson County, he resided in Buncombe County most of his life. He was a son of the late Thomas Stanhope Bagwell and Grace Nancy Spivey Bagwell. He was also preceded in death by his sisters: Lillie Mae Bagwell, Eldeva Merrill, and Ramona Mercer.

Mr. Bagwell was formerly employed with Sayles Bleachery before joining the U.S. Army. Private Dan H. Bagwell of Brickton (Buncombe Co, NC)was drafted into WWII on October 12, 1942 and completed basic training at Camp Croft, SC. Then completed advanced training as a Tank Driver in Kentucky. Participated in the liberation of North Africa in the US Army VI Corps under General Mark Clark. Pvt Bagwell as a M10 (Tank Destroyer) driver fought across Sicily then received a Bronze Star for action during the January 22 – May 1944 Battle of Anzio. Afterwards was with Allied Forces in the liberation of Rome. In June, 1944 in heavy fighting in the mountainous regions outside of Rome Pvt Bagwell was severely injured during an attack by German Mark VI Tiger tanks. After extended hospitalization in Europe, Pvt Bagwell, returned to the United States in August of 1944 where he was honorably discharged and retired from the US Army but continued many years of medical treatment. He earned battle ribbons in Africa / Middle Eastern and European Theater’s as well as the Bronze Star. We are forever in the debt of thanks for the action and bravery of our WWII Veterans. Liberty and freedom came at great cost and for Dan, he can finally rest in peace free from the memories of war.

Surviving are his sisters: Lou Hager of Statesville, and Bertha Dellinger and husband Jim Dellinger, MD of Asheville; brother, Jack Bagwell and wife, Gloria of Fairview; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Memorial services will be held at 12 PM Thursday, December 27, 2018, in the chapel of the Western Carolina State Veterans Cemetery with Rev. Leah Brown officiating. Military Honors will be provided by the North Carolina National Guard Honor Guard.

Ramona Tempie Bagwell Mercer Metter- Mrs. Ramona Tempie Bagwell Mercer, 86, of Metter entered eternal peace at Ogeechee Area Hospice in Statesboro on Thursday, September 25, 2014. One of seven children she was raised by Tom and Grace Bagwell in Fairview, NC (a suburb of Asheville). She met her husband of 59 years, Dr. Russell Mercer, in June of 1952 at Appalachian State University. Russell proposed at Bat Cave, NC and they were married that following Christmas day in High Shoals, NC. After earning her Bachelor's Degree in home economics, Ramona taught every grade except third during her 30 year career, though she primarily taught second grade. After residing in North Carolina and greater Atlanta, the Mercers retired home to Metter 1982. Ramona devoted herself to the community serving proudly on the 1987 Candler County Library Board of Trustees, the Retired Teachers Association, and the Metter Garden Club. She loved her church, First Baptist Church of Metter, and provided meals for the hospitality outreach, and joyfully sang in the choir. A talented painter, Ramona painted the Baptistery background at the church. Ramona was a fine southern lady most notably known for being a devoted wife, sweetheart to her friends, and for her sense of humor. She loved Elvis and gospel music. She will be remembered for her delicious meals, how she filled the house with laughter and her infectious sweet nature that was dear to everyone that knew her. A faithful Christian wife and mother her legacy is her amazing love that that she gave her husband, children and grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her husband Dr. Russell Mercer, Jr., daughter in law Helen Mercer, parents Tom and Grace Bagwell, and sisters Eldeva Merrill and Lillie Mae Bagwell. She is survived by her daughters, Julia Dawn Mercer, and Janie (Cleveland) Slater. Sons, Major Charles (Elaine) Mercer and Seaborn (Dr. Alicia) Mercer. Grandchildren, Russell (Karen) Vandiver, 1LT. Stephen Mercer, Ramona Grace (Travis) King, Seaborn, Jr. and Jack Mercer, Carolina and Joseph Slater; two great-grand daughters Ivy Vandiver and Amie Grace King. Also surviving are siblings Rev. Jack Bagwell, Dan Bagwell, Lou Hager and Bertha Dellinger; and two devoted and beloved friends, Mary Waters and Sara Gillis.      James Henry Bagwell was also known as James Henry Bagwill. He was born on 22 December 1837 in Old Brownsville, Jackson County, Illinois.1,2,3,4 He was the son of Burrell Bagwell and Gillia Cole.1,3,4 James Henry served in Company A and C of the 18th Regiment, Illinois Infantry of the United States Army during the American Civil War.5 He married Mary Jane Brown, daughter of Benjamin T. Brown and Dorcus Gates, on 16 September 1861 at Pinckneyville, Perry County, Illinois.1,2 He was working in a flour mill (Molenbrock Flour Mill according to his obiturary) in 1880.2 James Henry Bagwell died on 2 July 1928 in East Saint Louis, St. Clair County, Illinois, at age 90.1,5 He was buried on 4 July 1929 at Looney Springs Cemetery, Campbell Hill, Jackson County, Illinois.5
