Richard Jack Jeffries1

M, b. 29 August 1948, d. 24 March 2015
     Richard Jack Jeffries was born on 29 August 1948.1 He served in the US Army in Vietnam. He was wounded in combat and was 90% disabled as a result of his wounds. He married Kelley Suzanne Oetgen, daughter of Robert Mays Oetgen and Sydney H. Graham, in August 1997.1 Richard Jack Jeffries and Kelley Suzanne Oetgen were divorced after 29 September 1999.1 He was discharged from the military on 11 September 2001. Richard Jack Jeffries died on 24 March 2015 at age 66
Rich Jeffries, a resident of Tybee Island, died after a short illness at Oceanside Nursing Home surrounded by his family.


Born 1948 in Torrance, California, Rich grew up in Manhattan Beach, where he surfed and sailed Hobie Cats. Rich was drafted in the Vietnam War in 1968 where he received numerous decorations including the Purple Heart, Bronze Star and the Army Commendation Medal to name a few. In 1974 Rich became involved with the operation of regattas for the Hobie Company, whereas he arranged annually Hobie regattas worldwide. Because of his experience in running large international regattas he was invited in 1981 to be the venue coordinator for the 1984 Olympic yachting in Los Angeles. He is best known in the Savannah area for being the venue manager of the Olympic Games in 1996. For decades Rich was a delegate for the U.S. Sailing Olympic Committee (OSC) as well as the International Sailing Federation (ISAF).

He is survived by his daughter Jennifer Jeffries Phillips (Mark) of Boerne, Texas and a daughter Makenzie Jeffries of Savannah, grandsons Cole, Zachary and Landon. He is preceded in death by his parents, Willard and Lavera Jeffries as well as his sister Carol.

Frizzle married Janet K. (?) after 1960.1 Commander Melvin V. Frizzle died on 19 February 1997 Commander Melvin V. Frizzell, age 53, of Columbus, passed away Wednesday, February 19, 1997 at Kobacker House following a courageous six month bout with cancer. He was currently Commander of Technical Services with Columbus Division of Police with over 30 years of service. Survived by his son, Michael Frizzell; mother, Kathryn Frizzell; sister, Vivian Frizzell; brother, James Frizzell; loving and caring companion, Judy Harrington. Preceded in death by his wife Janet K. Frizzell and father Norm (Duke) Frizzell. He was a 1961 graduate of North High School and received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Ohio Dominican College in 1987. Veteran U.S. Air Force. He was a member of F.O.P. Lodge and several other professional associations.
