All this section was shocked at the news late last week the William Bagwill, a Mobile & Ohio freight brakeman living at Murphysboro but whose former home was at Campbell Hill, had been murdered on Friday night while in the discharge of his duty. On the down run Friday night, and while near Wheaton, young Bagwill was missed by a fellow brakeman, Deck Davis, also a Campbell Hill young man - and a search was made for him, resulting in the discovery, that he had been shot and killed on the roof of a boxcar by unknown parties. The unfortunate man was found dead from a bullet wound through the heart. It was at first reported that Bagwill had had trouble with some tramps up the road, and also that there was indications of a struggle on the car, but this was found to be untrue at the inquest, Three white men and one negro, all hobos, were on the train at the time, however, but there was no evidence against them; and there was no robbery. The deceased was about 23 years old, being the second son of Mr. And Mrs. Askins M. Bagwill, of Campbell Hill. He was a fine looking, athletic young man and, so far as we know, of good character.2 He was buried at Looney Springs Cemetery, Campbell Hill, Jackson County, Illinois.
