Born September 19, 1937, in Lorado, he was a son of the late Tom and Mary Goff.
Survivors include his wife of 50 years, Norma Hope Ward Goff; two daughters, Mary Ann (Jeff) Lane of Chapmanville, and Marty (David) Noe of McConnell; one son, John Goff II of Chapmanville; three granddaughters, Rachel and Lindsay Noe of McConnell and Shannan Noe of Wheeling; two great-granddaughters, Keiera Wilkinson of Wheeling and Maddy Noe of McConnell, and a host of other family and friends.
Pastor Goff was a graduate of the 1955 class of Logan High School and a 1959 graduate of West Virginia University where he was a member of the Kappa Sigma Phi fraternity. He was awarded a graduate fellowship at Indiana University and later received a master's degree from Ohio University. He completed his education by obtaining a Doctorate of Divinity from the Clarksville Theological Seminary. He was employed by the Logan County Board of Education, becoming Chapmanville High School's Dean of Boys in 1963, assistant principal in 1965 and finally became principal of the school in 1974. Also, at this time, he taught classes and coached the men's basketball team at the Logan Campus of Marshall University (now Southern West Virginia Community and Technical College.)
Pastor Goff was the shepherd of the First Baptist Church of Chapmanville for over 36 years. In 1977, he resigned his job as principal at Chapmanville High School to become the principal and director of the First Baptist Christian School in Chapmanville. The school remained in operation through 1999. Pastor Goff served on the board of directors for Logan Mingo Area Mental Health and had a special ministry to the patients at the Futures Drug Treatment Center in Logan. He also hosted a local radio broadcast, "A Time For Truth," each Sunday morning on WVOW Radio in Logan for the past 35 years.
Services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday, April 1, at the Freeman Funeral Home in Chapmanville with Pastor James Bledsoe officiating. Burial will follow at Highland Memory Gardens at Godby.
Pallbearers will be Robert R. Mays III, Richard Mays, Phillip Williamson, J.R. Vance, Joseph Pridemore, Brian Runyon and Gideon Jarvis.
Honorary pallbearers are Willie Akers, Danny Godby, Phil Williamson, Robert R. Mays Jr., Raamie Barker and Ralph Baughn.
He was buried at Highland Memory Gardens, Chapmanville, Logan County, West Virginia.
