Elizabeth Susan Bagwell was born on 24 February 1929. She was the daughter of Burley Hampton Bagwell and Hortense Virginia Floyd. Elizabeth Susan Bagwell died on 9 April 2016 in Savageville, Virginia, at age 87
Elizabeth Susan Bagwell was born February 24, 1929 to the late Hortense and Burley Bagwell.
She peacefully entered into eternal rest on April 9, 2016 at her daughter’s home in Savageville, Virginia.
“Lizzie” as she was known to many, was educated in the public schools of Accomack County. From a young age she had a love for learning. She was the valedictorian of her 7th grade class, a graduate of Mary N. Smith High School, and continued her education at Norfolk State College in Norfolk, Virginia, Temple University in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and earned her Bachelor’s degree from Elizabeth City State University in Elizabeth City, North Carolina.
After returning to the Shore, she was employed by Accomack County Public Schools as an Elementary school teacher at T.C. Walker and South Accomack Elementary Schools for over thirty years. She loved teaching and loved her students and wanted the best education for them.
She joined Gaskins Chapel AME Church, Savageville, Virginia in 1947 and served faithfully in several ministries, even as her health began to fail. Her service as a class leader, Sunday school teacher; member of the Adult Choir, Steward Board, Missionary Society, Lay Organization, and Culinary Committee, will long be remembered and appreciated for her excellence and dedication. She was nominated by her church for the Lifetime Missionary Warrior Award and will be honored, posthumously, at the Women's Missionary Society Annual Day on May 10, 2016. She loved her church and was a faithful member.
“Lizzie” enjoyed cleaning and organizing her home. She also loved trimming her shrubbery and reading. Everyone who met her will remember that she always had a “smile” on her face, loved to talk to everyone and possessed a caring heart.
Cherishing precious memories of dear Elizabeth are: a daughter, Ora Bagwell-Satchell; two sisters, Josephine Bagwell and Clara Miller; a grandson, Brandon Drummond; two great grandsons, Kanize and Ky’zerion Williams; a niece, Beverly Miller; a great niece, Muriel Bradbury and her daughter, Isabella Bradbury. A special cousin/sister, Vernice Willis; also four daughters, Marlene Thomas, Deborah Caldwell, Tracy Clarke, and Christine Lewis, a son Curtis Mapp, all who had adopted her as their mother; and a host of cousins and loving friends.
She was buried at Gaskins Chapel AME Church Cemet?ery, Savageville, Accomack County, Virginia.

H.M.S. Mahratta. Sunk by U-990, 25 February 1944.
HMS Mahratta was an M-class destroyer of the Royal Navy which served during World War II. Begun as Marksman, she was damaged while under construction, and dismantled to be rebuilt on a new slipway. She was launched as Mahratta in 1942, completed in 1943, and quickly pressed into service. Regiment/Service: Royal Navy, H.M.S. Gould
Son of Herbert James Bagwell and Thurza Ann Bagwell; husband of Gladys Ada Bagwell, of Yeovil, Somerset.
HMS Gould (K476) was a British Captain-class frigate of the Royal Navy in commission during World War II. Originally constructed as the United States Navy Evarts-class destroyer escort USS Lovering (DE-272), she served in the Royal Navy from 1943 until her sinking in 1944.
The ship was commissioned into service in the Royal Navy as the frigate HMS Gould (K476) under the command of Lieutenant Daniel William Ungoed,[3] RN, on 18 September 1943[1] simultaneously with her transfer. She served on convoy escort duty in the North Atlantic Ocean.

On 29 February 1944, Gould was operating as part of the First Escort Group when she, Affleck, Gore, and the British frigate HMS Garlies (K475) detected the German submarine U-358 in the North Atlantic north-northeast of the Azores and began a depth-charge attack which continued through the night and into 1 March 1944, the four frigates dropping a combined 104 depth charges. Gore and Garlies were forced to withdraw to Gibraltar to refuel on 1 March, but Affleck and Gould continued to attack U-358. During the afternoon of 1 March, U-358 succeeded in torpedoing and sinking Gould with a G7es – known to the Allies as "GNAT" – torpedo at position 45°46'N 23°16'W.
On 26 February 1944, Gould joined the British frigates HMS Affleck (K462) and HMS Gore (K481) in a depth-charge attack that sank the German submarine U-91 in the North Atlantic at position 49°45'N 26°20'W.[1]
Ungoed, six other officers, and 116 ratings died in the sinking, and only 14 of Gould's crew survived. U-358 was soon forced to surface after 38 hours submerged and was sunk by gunfire from Affleck at position 45°46'N 23°16'W.1 He was buried at Plymouth Naval Memorial, Plymouth, Plymouth Unitary Authority, Devon, England.1
