Petty Officer Stoker William Harry Bagwell was born on 17 August 1906 in Wincanton, South Somerset District, Somserset, England.1 He died on 25 February 1944 at age 37 Service No: D/K 64794
Age: 37
Regiment/Service: Royal Navy, H.M.S. Mahratta

Son of John and Lilian Bagvell, of Wincanton, Somerset; husband of Gwendoline Betty Bagwell, of Wincanton.

H.M.S. Mahratta. Sunk by U-990, 25 February 1944.

HMS Mahratta was an M-class destroyer of the Royal Navy which served during World War II. Begun as Marksman, she was damaged while under construction, and dismantled to be rebuilt on a new slipway. She was launched as Mahratta in 1942, completed in 1943, and quickly pressed into service. After a short but busy career in the North Atlantic and Arctic, largely guarding merchant convoys, she was torpedoed and sunk on 25 February 1944.

On 25 February 1944, a Catalina aircraft of 210 Squadron attacked and sank U-601 which was trailing the convoy. Mahratta was struck by two T5 Gnat torpedoes fired by U-990 off the coast of Norway. She sank at 71°17'N 13°30'E. Only 16 of the 236 crew survived.

Although Mahratta was lost, the convoy was a success. It was the largest convoy ever sent to Russia.

Side note: U-990 was sunk on 25 May 1944 in the Norwegian Sea at 65°05'N 07°28'ECoordinates: 65°05'N 07°28'E after being depth charged by a RAF Liberator bomber of 59 Squadron.

Sqn Ldr B. Sisson sighted U-990 on the surface at 06:23 and attacked under cover of a rain squall, dropping six depth charges. Following the attack, the submarine could be seen sinking amid a large oil slick.

There were 20 crew killed, and 33 survivors.1 He was buried at Plymouth Naval Memorial, Plymouth, Plymouth Unitary Authority, Devon, England.1

Able Seaman Wreford Thomas Bagwell1

M, d. 1 March 1944
Able Seaman Wreford Thomas Bagwell died on 1 March 1944 Service No: D/JX 206129
Regiment/Service: Royal Navy, H.M.S. Gould

Son of Herbert James Bagwell and Thurza Ann Bagwell; husband of Gladys Ada Bagwell, of Yeovil, Somerset.

HMS Gould (K476) was a British Captain-class frigate of the Royal Navy in commission during World War II. Originally constructed as the United States Navy Evarts-class destroyer escort USS Lovering (DE-272), she served in the Royal Navy from 1943 until her sinking in 1944.

The ship was commissioned into service in the Royal Navy as the frigate HMS Gould (K476) under the command of Lieutenant Daniel William Ungoed,[3] RN, on 18 September 1943[1] simultaneously with her transfer. She served on convoy escort duty in the North Atlantic Ocean.

On 26 February 1944, Gould joined the British frigates HMS Affleck (K462) and HMS Gore (K481) in a depth-charge attack that sank the German submarine U-91 in the North Atlantic at position 49°45'N 26°20'W.[1]

On 29 February 1944, Gould was operating as part of the First Escort Group when she, Affleck, Gore, and the British frigate HMS Garlies (K475) detected the German submarine U-358 in the North Atlantic north-northeast of the Azores and began a depth-charge attack which continued through the night and into 1 March 1944, the four frigates dropping a combined 104 depth charges. Gore and Garlies were forced to withdraw to Gibraltar to refuel on 1 March, but Affleck and Gould continued to attack U-358. During the afternoon of 1 March, U-358 succeeded in torpedoing and sinking Gould with a G7es – known to the Allies as "GNAT" – torpedo at position 45°46'N 23°16'W. Ungoed, six other officers, and 116 ratings died in the sinking, and only 14 of Gould's crew survived. U-358 was soon forced to surface after 38 hours submerged and was sunk by gunfire from Affleck at position 45°46'N 23°16'W.1 He was buried at Plymouth Naval Memorial, Plymouth, Plymouth Unitary Authority, Devon, England.1
