Son of Samuel and Abigail (nee Crosby). He was a Revolutionary War Soldier at a very early age. He was one of the Braintree men on the Privateer "Essex" of Salem captured by the British in the English Channel and taken prisoner in England in April 1781 and released through the efforts of John Adams. He was then aged only 13 years and was the cabin boy according to tradition. Husband of Judith Spear whom he wed on October 17, 1793. After she died he married Ann (Nancy) Adams on January 12, 1797. They had six children: Josiah, Abigail Adams, Mary Ann, Samuel, Peter Boylston, and George Washington. Married for a third and fourth time to Priscilla Ford in 1821 and in Lydia Prior, widow of William Prior in 1827.1


He was buried at Quincy, Norfolk County, Massachusetts.1
