     Dr. Howard Roberts Bagwell Jr. was born on 25 January 1938 in Chicago, Cook County, Illinois. He was the son of Howard Roberts Bagwell and Ruth Hedwig Matilda Herbold. Dr. Howard Roberts Bagwell Jr. died on 3 December 2002 in Portland, Multnomah County, Oregon, at age 64

Dr. Howard Roberts Bagwell Jr., a psychotherapist and psychiatrist who was equally in his element counseling the homeless and teaching advanced-level courses on Freud, died Tuesday, Dec. 3, of a heart attack. He was 64.

Dr. Bagwell , known to family and friends as Bob, crossed over many traditional barriers in his field in his personal practice and teaching.

"He read in all the fields," said his wife, Anne Bagwell . "He really didn't love one more than the other."

His broad intellectual curiosity was clear in the classrooms of the Northwest Center for Psychoanalysis, where he was on the faculty, said Kirsten Schwanke, who co-taught with him on several occasions.

"He was an exquisite teacher," said Schwanke, a psychoanalyst. "As we talked about psychiatry or psychology, he would bring in new ideas from music and from literature. He disliked narrowness in any form or shape."

Dr. Bagwell was also a strong advocate for homeless and indigent people in need of mental health care, said Anne Bagwell . He often kept seeing patients whose insurance had run out or who did not have the means to pay him.

He was an avid martial artist who practiced kung fu and aikido. He meditated every day for the past 40 years, his wife said.

He was born Jan. 25, 1938, in Chicago and moved to Portland in 1976. He received his medical degree from the University of Chicago. He served in the Oregon Mental Health Division and as a consultant to the Oregon State Hospital's Child and Adolescent Secure Treatment Program.

In 1981, he became director of psychiatric training at Providence Medical Center. He served on the board of directors of Janis Youth Programs. He maintained a private practice in Portland and taught at the Providence Psychotherapy Center and Clinic.

He is survived by his wife; daughter, Elizabeth; and brother, Richard.

A memorial service will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 14, in the Multnomah Art Center, 7688 S.W. Capitol Highway.

     Walter Bryant Stallings was born in November 1878 in Clayton, North Carolina. He married Martha Evangeline Bagwell, daughter of Edward Hiram G. Bagwell and Marjorie Price O'Neil, before 1900. Walter Bryant Stallings died on 10 June 1954 in Clayton, North Carolina, at age 75.

     Virgie Rachel Bagwell was born on 28 January 1890 in Winston, Mississippi. She was the daughter of Frederick Terry Bagwell and Rachel Weeks. Virgie Rachel Bagwell died on 16 April 1979 in Winston, Mississippi, at age 89.

Thomas H. Bagwell, 70, of the 6600 block of E. Virginia Beach Blvd., died Feb. 14, 1996, in a Norfolk hospital.
Mr. Bagwell, a native of Newberry, S.C., was retired from the U.S. Navy after 30 years of service. He was a Baptist and Navy veteran of World War II. He was a member of VFW and Moose Lodge (NU)39.
Survivors include his wife, Edna Bagwell; a daughter, Barbara B. Taylor of Virginia Beach; two stepdaughters, Linda Batdorf of Afton, Va., and Cindy Wright of Sierra Vista, Ariz; a son, Thomas H. Bagwell Jr. of Lorton, Va; four stepsons, Robert Simonton of Quincy, Mass., David Simonton of Montgomery, Ala., John Simonton of Quincy and Richard Simonton of Virginia Beach; stepmother, Lucille Bagwell of Lincolnton, Ga; a stepsister, Betty Veal of Dublin, Ga; five grandchildren; 22 step-grandchildren; a great-grandchild; and five step-great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday by the Rev. David Rhodenhizer in Smith and Williams Funeral Home, Norfolk Chapel. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery with full military honors. The family will receive friends in the funeral home from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today. Memorial donations may be made to the American Heart Association.¹ He was buried at Forest Lawn Cemetery, Norfolk, Norfolk City, Virginia.¹
