Coley Bagwell, age 88, passed away on Thursday, October 18, 2018, at his residence in Starkville, Mississippi. Visitation will be Saturday, October 20 from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. at Nowell Massey Funeral Home in Louisville, Mississippi. Funeral services will be 3 p.m. Sunday, October 21 in the Nowell Massey Funeral Home Chapel with Dr. Grant Arinder and Rev. Perry Pugh officiating. Interment will follow in Memorial Park Cemetery with Rev. Scott Fortenberry officiating.

Coley was born in Louisville on October 8, 1930, to John Milton and Willie Fulcher Bagwell. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Louisville and was a Shriner. After losing his sight as a young adult, he attended the Mississippi School for the Blind and learned to tune pianos. He owned Bagwell Piano and Furniture Company for many years traveling many miles tuning pianos in churches, schools, and homes.

Coley is survived by four children: Patty Reynolds and husband Dr. Kevin Reynolds of Forest, Mississippi; Corey Bagwell of Starkville, Mississippi; Nancy Hardy and husband Steve also of Starkville; and David Bagwell and wife Shasta of York, Pennsylvania. One of his greatest joys was being “Papaw Coley” to his nine grandchildren: Kur Reynolds (Robbye Anne), Ky Reynolds (Casey), Taylor Hardy, Riley Hardy, Will Hardy, William Bagwell, Coley Bagwell, Dayton Bagwell, and Deacon Bagwell. He is also survived by his brother, Rodney Bagwell and wife Judy and sister-in-law Frances Bagwell all of Louisville. Coley is preceded in death by his wife, Doris Taylor Bagwell; his parents; his brothers James Harold “Bunt” Bagwell and John Milton Bagwell, Jr; and his sister Jo Ann Miller.

Serving as pallbearers are William Bagwell, Riley Hardy, Will Hardy, Jimmy Bagwell, Ricky Miller, and Dean Wingate. Memorials contributions in honor of Coley may be given to the Lions Club, P. O. Box 425, Louisville, MS 39339.1

He was buried at Memorial Park, Louisville, Winston County, Mississippi.1

Visitation will be Wednesday from 9:00 A.M. until service time at the funeral home. Interment will be in Murphy Creek Baptist Cemetery. Porter Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Joanne was born December 23, 1928, in Winston County, Mississippi. She was a homemaker, a former employee of Spartus Corp., and an aide for many years at Tri-County Nursing Home. Mrs. Miller was also a member of Murphy Creek Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Darnald Miller; her parents, Willie Fulcher Bagwell and John Milton Bagwell; and two brothers, John Bagwell and James Harold Bagwell.

She is survived by two daughters, Sheila (Albert) Palmieri and Renee Trosper; one son, Richard D. (Sue Ellen) Miller; two brothers, Rodney Bagwell and Coley Bagwell, all of Louisville; 7 grandchildren; and 7 great grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be Dwayne Culpepper, Donnie Hollis, Freddy Fulcher, Bobby Stewart, Junior Stewart, and Mike Eaves.

She was buried at Murphy Creek Cemetery, Louisville, Winston County, Mississippi.

His Parents and Siblings:
William Franklin (Frank) BAGWELL and his identical twin brother Martin Frederick (Fed) BAGWELL, were born 12 Jul 1863 near Ackerman, Choctaw Co, MS, on their parents’ farm in Beat Five. Their father was John Leander BAGWELL, born 3 Jan 1832 in Shelby Co, AL, who was the son of Frederick BAGWELL and Margaret Ann (Peggy) CRAWFORD. Their mother, Sarah Frances Elizabeth TURNER, born 10 Sep 1842 in Oktibbeha Co, MS, was the daughter of Franklin TURNER and Keziah McCLANAHAN. The twins’ older sister was Sarah Angeline (Lora) BAGWELL. Younger brothers were Henry Harrison BAGWELL, John Pilot BAGWELL, Joseph E. Lee BAGWELL, Robert (Bob) BAGWELL, and Marcus Estell BAGWELL. The younger sisters were Anna Lou BAGWELL, Lena BAGWELL, Artelia Jane BAGWELL, and Effie May BAGWELL. Two unnamed infants born to John and Sarah BAGWELL died young.

PART ONE:
William (Frank) BAGWELL’s First Marriage
When he was twenty-five years old, William Franklin BAGWELL married Edna Vilula CORK 18 December 1888 in Ackerman, Choctaw Co, MS. Edna CORK, born 1 April 1869 in Ackerman, Choctaw Co, MS, was the daughter of William Isaac CORK and Mary Ann (Molly) CORK. The following information is taken from the book “Geneology of the Cork Family” by Carmen WEATHERALL: “The parents of Mary Ann CORK were Rebecca Catherine CORK, born in Choctaw Co, MS, and James CORK II who was born in AL. James CORK ll was the nephew of James CORK l who was born in Cork, Ireland. Elizabeth HUFFMAN was the mother of Rebecca Catherine CORK. ” Frank and Edna made their home about three and one half miles north of Ackerman, MS, on her parents’ farm where their children were born.

Frank and Edna BAGWELL became the parents of three sons: William John (Willie) BAGWELL, born 26 Sep 1889, Floyd Vernon BAGWELL, born 12 Oct 1893, and Hugh Urban BAGWELL, born 9 April 1896. Edna died 8 November 1897 at age 28, and shortly afterwards their four-year-old son Floyd died 28 Nov 1897. Their cause of death was flux. They are buried beside each other in Lebanon Presbyterian Church Cemetery, Choctaw Co, MS.

Family Story:
A family story related by Irene Bagwell WOODS, who was a granddaughter of Frank and his first wife Edna, about the reason Frank and his second wife, Ada BAGWELL, moved to TX describes a dispute. Frank had a problem with a neighboring dog bothering his cattle and shot the dog to death. Soon a black man appeared at Frank’s door with a gun. It’s said that Frank shot the man and thought that it was best that he leave Choctaw CO. (This writer has not confirmed these facts.)

Rilla was born 19 Dec 1899 in Greenville, Hunt Co, TX, and died 9 Apr 1925 in Houston, Harris Co, TX. Her parents were George Washington SKINNER and Mary Elizabeth GILLISPIE. The two children born to Hugh and Rilla BAGWELL in Greenville, Hunt Co, TX. They were Mary Edna BAGWELL, born 12 May 1920, and Hugh Urban (Buck) BAGWELL, Jr., born 19 Jan 1923.

Their son Delmar (Sam) BAGWELL was born in Commerce, Hunt Co, TX, 23 Jun 1905. Their last child Horace Hubert BAGWELL also was born in Commerce, Hunt Co, TX, 8 May 1916. Now there was a family of six children: two living sons from the first marriage and three sons and one daughter from the second marriage. William Franklin BAGWELL died 2 Oct 1939 in Commerce, Hunt Co, TX. Ada BAGWELL died 23 Mar 1962 in Greenville, Hunt Co, TX. They are buried in Hunt Co, TX.

Percy Dollar BAGWELL, the first child of Frank and Ada, married about 1917 in Texas to Rosie Maybelle CRAWFORD. Their children were born in Greenville, Hunt Co, TX. Juanita Pearl BAGWELL was born 14 Jan 1918, Loveta BAGWELL was born 5 Feb 1920, Percy Dollar BAGWELL, Jr., was born 2 Feb 1922, and Katherine Estell BAGWELL was born 13 Mar 1927.

Joseph Frederick (Fed) BAGWELL, the second child of Frank and Ada, died 30 Apr 1959 in Van, Van Zandt Co, TX. He married first Elizabeth HARPER Apr 1926. Her parents were Ganes Francis HARPER and Mary Ellen NIX. Elizabeth was born in Gorman, Eastland Co, TX, 19 May 1904 and died 25 May 1935. Three children were born to Fed and Elizabeth. Their first child was James Floyd BAGWELL, born 19 Aug 1931, died 11 Sep 1990 in Dallas, Dallas Co, TX. Their third child was Shirley Mack BAGWELL, born 17 Nov 1935 in Van, Van Zandt Co, TX. The second marriage of Joseph Frederick (Fed) BAGWELL was to Dixie Mae CRENSHAW.

Fed and Elizabeth’s second child married two times and has one child. Their son Shirley Mack BAGWELL married Jill Mary SLATER in Riverside, Riverside Co, CA, at March Air Force Base. Jill was born 2 Feb 1929 in Assam, India, to Matthew Ernest SLATER and Kathleen Margaret SHELLEY. Two children were born to Shirley and Jill. Shirley died 11 Mar 1986 in Carrollton, Dallas Co, TX.

Leslie Jewell BAGWELL, the third child of Frank and Ada BAGWELL, married Carl THOMPSON 20 Nov 1921 in Lone Oak, Hunt Co, TX. He was born 2 Sep 1893 to John THOMPSON and Mattie Unknown. Carl died 2 Nov 1963 in Cash Hunt Co, TX. Children born to Leslie and John are Carlene THOMPSON, born 4 July 1924 in Hunt Co., TX, Dorothy THOMPSON, born 11 Nov 1926 in Hunt Co, TX, and three sons (information private). One son married twice. Leslie and John have four grandchildren and ten great grandchildren.

The fourth child of Frank and Ada BAGWELL was Delmar (Sam) BAGWELL who married Mabel MASSEY 1932 in Commerce, Hunt Co, TX. She was born 20 Apr 1914 in Texas to John MASSEY and Rozella UNKNOWN. Delmar died 8 Oct 1981 in Greenville, Hunt Co, TX. Mabel died 10 Oct 1934 in Hunt Co, TX and is buried in Stewart Cemetery in Hunt Co, TX. They had one child, three grandchildren, and fourteen great grandchildren. Delamar BAGWELL’s other spouses were Tencie Marie COVINGTON and Emma WILLIAMS.

Horace Hubert BAGWELL, the fifth and youngest child of Frank and Ada BAGWELL, was first married 23 Sep ca 1935 in TX to Vera MASSEY, a sister of Horace’s brother Delmar’s wife. Vera was born 22 Sept 1918 in TX and died 20 Feb 1937 in Hunt Co, TX. Her parents were John MASSEY and Rozella UNKNOWN. Horace and Vera had one child and three grandchildren. Horace married second Myrle Evelyn DENTON. He died 18 Sep 1983 in Sulphur Springs, Hopkins Co, TX. [Note from JMB: W. Irene Woods records show different spellings for Myrle/Merle DentonÂ’s name. Horace Hubert Bagwell’s second marriage was to Merle Evelyn DENTON ca 1940. She was born 31 Jul 1920 in Hopkins Co., TX. They had one child.1

     Sarah Angeline "Lora" Bagwell was born on 14 August 1860 in Choctaw County, Mississippi. She was the daughter of John Leander Bagwell and Sarah Frances Elizabeth Turner. Sarah Angeline "Lora" Bagwell married Winston W. Graves in 1880 at Choctaw County, Mississippi. Sarah Angeline "Lora" Bagwell died on 3 April 1945 at age 84.

     Winston W. Graves was born on 6 October 1854 in Blount County, Alabama. He married Sarah Angeline "Lora" Bagwell, daughter of John Leander Bagwell and Sarah Frances Elizabeth Turner, in 1880 at Choctaw County, Mississippi. Winston W. Graves died on 25 January 1943 at age 88.
