CARTERVILLE -- Gene Bagwell, 88, of Moulton, Alabama, formerly of Carterville, passed away at 4:40 a.m. Friday, Jan. 23, 2015, at home with his family by his side.
He was born April 12, 1926, in Carterville, to Ernest and Clara Bagwell.
Gene proudly served his country in the U.S. Navy during World War II and witnessed the atomic bomb testing at Bikini Atoll. He continued his call to serve in the U.S. Army as a Sgt. 1st Class during the Korean War.
He graduated from William Hood Dunwoody College and Minneapolis State College.
After graduation, Gene began working as a tool and dye specialist. He was employed by Rockwell Automation in Minneapolis and worked on the Apollo Rocket Guidance Systems in the 1960s. Never one to shy away from work, Gene worked at various places throughout his lifetime including-Norge in Herrin, Inland Steel in Sesser, and HHS Machinery in Moulton-which he owned and operated. In his later years, he worked for Tac Enterprises in Alabama rebuilding and restoring tractors from all over the world and lastly, Walmart where he did custodial work.
He is survived by his wife, Klieta Bagwell of Moulton, Alabama; children and their spouses, Jeff Bagwell (Kathy) of Litchfield, Lynn Bittle (Randy) of Carterville, Gene Bagwell (Lacie) of Carterville, Jennifer Culp of Decatur, Alabama, Travis Bagwell of Birmingham, Alabama; grandchildren, Lindsay Campbell, Callie Bagwell, Ashley Bagwell, Nathan Bittle, Max Bittle, Wes Bittle, Devin Bagwell, Sarah Gittlein, Andrew Gittlein, Brady Bagwell, Alexis Culp, and Stone Culp; eight great-grandchildren; sister, Beverly Huff of Bluford; sister-in-law, Marian Bagwell of Atlanta, Georgia; and many nieces and nephews.
Gene was preceded in death by his parents, Ernest and Clara Bagwell; brother, Ernie Bagwell; and brother-in-law, Dale Huff.
In addition to belonging to the Masonic Lodge and Shriner’s Temple, Gene was also a member of American Legion, lifetime member of the VFW, and an Eagle Scout Master.
Services for Gene will be on April 12, in Moulton, Alabama, on what would have been his 89th birthday.

She formerly lived in Birmingham for 25 years. She retired from Aladdin cleaners after 21 years of service. She was preceded in death by her husband, George L. Bagwell Sr; her brother, William Edward "Bill" Meads Sr; and her sisters, Audrey Bastedo and Johnnie Mae Henderson. She is survived by her sons, George L. (Sharron) Bagwell Jr. and William E. (Shelia) Meads Jr; daughters, Georgette Bagwell and Leona B. (Lowell) Douglas; six grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. He also served in WWI. He moved to Michigan and changed his name. His name was legally changed to Charles William Bagwell Sr.1 Charles William Gossett married Marie Elizabeth Arnold on 5 April 1918 at Mecklenburg County, North Carolina. I believe he may have served two years in an Iowa prison for interstate car theft (Dyer Act) in Men's Reformatory, Anamosa, Jones County, Iowa, from 28 April 1922 and paroled in January 30, 1923. Charles William Gossett and Marie Elizabeth Arnold lived between 1930 and 1940 in Dearborn, Wayne County, Michigan. Charles William Gossett died on 11 December 1950 at age 52.1,2 He was buried at Grand Lawn Cemetery, Detroit, Wayne County, Michigan.2
