Isaiah Bagwell

M, b. 13 September 1760, d. 8 October 1839
     Isaiah Bagwell was born on 13 September 1760 in Accomack County, Virginia.1,2,3 He was the son of Isaiah Bagwell and Sarah Poulson. He enlisted on 5 July 1776 and served as private in Captain George Gilchrest's company, Colenl Thomas Fleming and George Matthews' 9th Virginia Regiment. They marched north, was with the main army in Philadelpha, alsio in numerous places in New Jersy, and was in the battle of Germantown, in which he was taken prisoner. He was exchanged later at Vally Forge, and returned to Virginia.2 On 1 November 1779, he shipped on board the schooner Betsey, commanded be Offia Bordman, sailed from the James River for France, sailed from there on April 1, 1780 an April 12th he was captured by the British pirvateer, Union, commanded by Captain John Broom. Isaiah was given the choice of serving on a British ship or prison. He refused to serve on a British ship and was sent to England and confined in "Terten" prison, near "Portsmouth on Spit head" until May 28, 1782 at which time he was put on board the ship, Tiger, and carried to Philadelphia.

From the suffering and confinement while in prison, Isaiah almost lost the use of his legs and had to use crutches.2 He married Christina Newton on 3 January 1790 at Accomack County, Virginia.1,2,3,4 Isaiah Bagwell died on 8 October 1839 in Accomack County, Virginia, at age 79.1,2,3 He was buried at Greenbush, Accomack County, Virginia.2,3
