Graveside services will be at 3 p.m. Saturday in Claude Cemetery in Claude with Jeff Conway, pastor of Westminster Presbyterian Church, officiating. Arrangements are by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors, 2800 Paramount Blvd.

Imogene was born March 17, 1927, in Claude to Robert Luke and Bertie Bagwell, and was the eighth of nine children. She graduated from Claude High School and was only 16 years old when she entered Texas Tech University. She received her B.A. in speech from Texas Tech in 1947. She continued her education and received a master's in speech pathology from the University of Iowa in 1956 and was awarded a doctorate in special education from Texas Tech University in 1971.

Imogene was an educator and made a difference in the lives of many children with speech difficulties. She began her teaching career in speech at Clovis, N.M., and later at Ysleta Public Schools in El Paso. While in El Paso, she produced many outstanding plays with her theater arts students that are a significant and well- documented part of the history of Ysleta High School. She taught at Southeast Missouri State University in Cape Girardeau, Mo., for 10 years. In 1983, she moved to Pampa and worked in the speech and language area for exceptional children for schools in the Pampa-Perryton region.

After retiring in 1986, she moved to Amarillo. She was an avid and gifted bowler. She participated in many leagues in El Paso and received awards for her accomplishments including several perfect games of 300.

In Missouri, she took up golf and became very accomplished at this as well. She was an active member of the Panhandle Country Club and had a zero handicap at one point in her golfing career. She was an ardent Red Raider fan and along with her sister, Maurine, and her husband, T.L. "Luke" Leach, was a devoted supporter of all things Tech, especially football and Lady Raider basketball. One of her favorite memories was meeting coach Marsha Sharp when the USA Olympic team played in Lubbock in April 2004.

After retirement, Imogene became the family caregiver. Her care and dedication to her siblings was unwavering, especially the care she gave to Estelle, Johnnye and Don as they dealt with health issues. She was a cherished aunt and great-aunt to everyone. She took great pride in her 19 nieces and nephews, 43 great-nieces and great-nephews and the generation that followed.

She was the keeper of the family home in Claude and helped create many family memories including Easter egg decorating, cookie baking and the annual Christmas lunch at this house. In retirement, she continued to enjoy family occasions and was a devoted supporter of the activities of her great nieces and nephews. She rarely missed a game or activity in which one was participating, whether it was soccer or baseball games or year-end school awards ceremonies. Her education was a benefit later in her life as she became the family tutor for her great-nephews Luke and Levi's spelling bee competitions all throughout their elementary school years.

     William Bert Bagwell was born on 20 April 1920 in Texas.1 He was the son of Robert Luke Bagwell and Bertie Ophelia Weeks. He served as a 2ndt Lt in the Army Air Forces during World War II in 365th Bomb Squadron / 305th Bomb Group known as "Can Do". He flew as the navigator in a B-17 (#4124564). The plane was nicknamed 'Patches'.

His aircarft was shot down by a German Bf-109A enemy aircraft on 17 August 1943 in B-17 (#41-24564). It was on a mission to bomb Schweinfurt, Bavaria, Germany.

The Schweinfurt–Regensburg mission was a strategic bombing mission during World War II carried out by Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers of the U.S. Army Air Forces on August 17, 1943. The mission was an ambitious plan to cripple the German aircraft industry; it was also known as the "double-strike mission" because it entailed two large forces of bombers attacking separate targets in order to disperse fighter reaction by the Luftwaffe. It was also the first American "shuttle" mission, in which all or part of a mission landed at a different field and later bombed another target before returning to its base.

After being postponed several times by unfavorable weather, the operation, known within the Eighth Air Force as "Mission No. 84", was flown on the anniversary of the first daylight raid by the Eighth Air Force.

Mission No. 84 was a strike by 376 bombers of 16 bomb groups against German heavy industry well beyond the range of escorting fighters. The mission inflicted heavy damage on the Regensburg target, but at catastrophic loss to the force, with 60 bombers lost and many more damaged beyond economical repair. As a result, the Eighth Air Force was unable to follow up immediately with a second attack that might have seriously crippled German industry. When Schweinfurt was finally attacked again two months later, the lack of long-range fighter escort had still not been addressed and losses were even higher. As a consequence, deep penetration strategic bombing was curtailed for five months.

His B-17 aircraft crashed in Averbode, five miles NW Diest, Belgium - Scherpenheuvel-Zichem, Arrondissement Leuven, Flemish Brabant (Vlaams-Brabant), Belgium

Three crewmembers were killed in action (KIA):
* Pilot: Douglas L. Mutschler
* CoPilot: Ed Carter
* Flight engineer/top turret gunner: Carlton Boberg

Seven were taken as Prisoners of War:
* Navigator: Bill Bagwell
* Bombardier: Wendell Luce
* Radio Operator: Whitney Simon
* Ball turret gunner: Lee Quinliven
* Waist gunner: Meyer Baker
* Waist gunner: Tony Buckley
* Tail gunner: Erwin Grundman

The plane was nicknamed 'Patches'.

The 305th Bombardment Group (Heavy), nicknamed "Can Do" was activated 1-March-1942 at Salt Lake City Air Base, Utah which was their primary training base until 11-Jun-1942 when they relocated to Geiger Field, Washington until 29-Jun-1942, then on to Muroc Lake Air Base in California for intensive flight training between 29-Jun-42 to 20-August-1942

In early September 1942 the ground unit traveled by train to Fort Dix, New Jersey then on 5-September-1942 the ground unit sailed on the Queen Mary and disembarked on at Greenock, Inverclyde, UK on 12-September-1942 and proceeded to their UK Station 106 at Grafton Underwood.

Meanwhile, the air unit proceeded to Syracuse, New York for six weeks of advanced flight training between late August 1942 until October 1942 when they received new B-17F bombers. The bombers flew via the Presque Isle, Maine-Gander, Newfoundland-Prestwick, UK route during October 1942 and assembled at Grafton Underwood. The Group flew its first mission on 17-November-1942 flying a diversion mission for other groups bombing the U-Boat pens at St. Nazaire, France. On 11-Dec-1942 the Group was relocated to Station 105, Chelveston where it remained for the remainder of the war. For a week in July 1945, the Group moved to St. Trond, Belgium, where it conducted photo-mapping flights over Europe and North Africa as part of Project "Casey Jones".

During their tour of duty the Group flew 337 missions in 9,321 sorties and dropped 22,363 tons of bombs. The Group lost 154 aircraft MIA; 13 of those losses occurred on the famous "2nd Schweinfurt" mission of 14-Oct-1943, the most losses of any Bomb Group participating in that action. Because of the losses the Group sustained on that mission, the Group was given the Nazi flag that flew above that city when it was captured by the US 42nd Infantry Division in April 1945.

THE 305th BOMB GROUP on BLACK THURSDAY 14-10-1943
While looking for information on Donald Paul Breeden and his crew, I read some books about this ‘Back Thursday’ and the way in which the 305th Bomb Group was hurt on this raid - Mission 115 - into the well defended German heartland.

I did read a book about the Mighty Eight and the books with personal stories like by John Comer and Steve Snyder. While looking into the story of Grandpa Dassen his bomber boots I’ve read on the internet about the evaders like Stan Alukonis and Steve Krawczynski. Also from Mr. Roberts’ and Mr. Linrud’s stories I got a good idea of their adventures and feelings.

Mr. Caidin is mild in his book while Mr. Kuhl in his is very outspoken on the leadership of the 305th Bomb Group on that Black Thursday: Normand had to little experience on flying B-17‘s, on leading and was not recommended for more leading by his former CO. But on the 14th he was the leader.
Who ever is right, it does not change the big losses of men and machines from this group in which the 364 Bomb Squadron of Donald Paul Breeden and his fellow crew members was the one who was hit hardest.

Other things went wrong as well. The Germans were alerted by the message from Gen. Anderson that was sent ‘in the clear‘ instead as ‘secret’ on 13th of October just before midnight. So some 1.100 German planes were ready and on alert.

Due to gathering problems because of the bad weather over England the US fighter escort had to return earlier than planned. It is also said that they started to early so lost fuel on waiting for the combat boxes of B-17’s.

The escorting P-47’s left at 13.33 hours. Map reference 5102N-0555E is between Genk and Opglabbeek in Belgium. Crash time of the A/C 42-3436 was around 13.45 hours; 12 minutes later. Flying in the low group and fast still trying to get near their leader way after their ‘little friends’ had to turn home. Flying into a corridor of German airfields with about 1.100 fighters ready to attack and several cities surrounded with FLAK the 305th Bomb Group lost many planes - the second one crashed near Eygelshoven.

Of the 305th Bomb Group only 3 B-17’s reached Schweinfurt. And only 2 made it back home to Chelveston. The B-17 of Dienhart/42-30831 of the 364th squadron crash landed in Switzerland.
The 364th squadron was totally destroyed that day - within 13 minutes and before it even could cross the Rhine.

From the book by Mr. Kuhl I got most of this information on the losses of the 305th Bomb Group:
13.40 hours - Murdock 364th/#42 -29952 in Limmel (NL)
