Richard Clarence Bagwell was born on 9 October 1931 in Sanborn, Niagara County, New York. He was the son of John Murray Bagwell and Anna Shenk. Richard Clarence Bagwell married Violet Mustari in 1957. Richard Clarence Bagwell died on 12 April 2010 at age 78 Served as an MM2 US Navy during the Korean War.

Bagwell, Richard Clarence
beloved husband, son, stepfather, stepgrandfather, brother, uncle, co-worker, and friend passed away Monday, April 12, 2010, at the age of 78 in Phoenix, Arizona. Born in 1931 in Sanborn, New York, to John Murray and Anna Barbara Bagwell, Richard entered the world as the youngest of four children. He was raised on a sprawling fruit farm in Sanborn where he spent many days exploring the beautiful farmland with his brothers. As a very young boy, it was obvious Richard had a very strong natural artistic ability. He loved to draw pictures and often used his mother's white porcelain stove as his personal canvas. His father soon realized that art was a very im
portant part of Richard's life and encouraged his interest by sending him for private lessons under the talented watch of Heinrich Feldmann, a portrait and landscape artist well-known in the area. When he was eleven years old, Richard's mother passed away and his father became an integral part of his life. With his encouragement, Richard studied art until the end of high school, but art would continue to remain a significant part of his life for years to come. From 1951 to 1956, Richard served in the United States Navy and was fortunate enough to visit may places around the world such as England, France, Portugal, Spain, Italy, North Africa, Turkey, New Zealand, and the Philippine Islands. He fought in the Korean war and received an honorable discharge. He returned to his home after leaving the Navy and went into business with his father, designing, building, and landscaping custom homes in the Niagara Falls, New York area. In 1957, he married Violet Mustari and soon after moved to Phoenix, Arizona, where he would spend the rest of his life. A few years later, he went to work for the City of Phoenix, where he earned five promotions to the level of Assistant Customer Services Administrator of the Customer Services Division of the Water Services Department. He received the the City Manager's Award for Excellence in Public Service in 1986 for his instrumental role in the implementation of the microcomputer meter reading system. He provided twenty-nine years of outstanding service to the City of Phoenix. He was very well known for his honesty, integrity, and dedication in all aspects of his life. Violet's health deteriorated in 1990, and after thirty-three years of marriage, Richard laid her to rest after a long battle with cancer. It was a very difficult time in his life, and he fought through it with the help of his faithful companions, Springer Spaniels Buddy and Babe. In 1996, Richard found love again with Mary Garza-Bagwell, and began a new life with her. They enjoyed antique shopping, and working on various arts and crafts projects together. He took on the role of stepdad and "grandpa," and loved her family as his own. Over the years, his love of arts and crafts increased and he immersed himself in books and magazines, broadening his knowledge of leather and copper tooling, sculpting, casting, wood carving, oil painting, water colors, pen and ink sketching, silversmithing, and wire art. He created many beautiful pieces of artwork that he sold to customers, but took pleasure in giving gifts of his art to friends and family. Along with his artwork, Richard had the remarkable gift of storytelling. Whether about his childhood on the farm, memories of time spent with his family, especially his older brother Bob, or his travels around the world, he had a special way of making his stories come to life. Sometimes his stories would make him laugh and other times they would bring tears to his eyes. He was sentimental and nostalgic about the time he spent as a youth in New York and always looked back fondly on those early years. In his spare time, he loved reading books on trivia and was known as the guy with all the "little known facts." He was especially knowledgeable about history and had a remarkable memory for dates and important events. Richard also had a wonderful sense of humor and was especially gifted at telling jokes. He had a heart of gold and loved to write funny stories on growing older and send them to his family. Even at the end of his life he would crack a joke to make us laugh. He was literally a jack-of-all-trades and knew something about everything. He took pride in all he did, from his morning shave to his meticulously handmade birdhouses. He would even complete every piece of artwork by attaching a tag that read, "Handmade In My Shop With Pride." Proud survivors include his wife, Mary Garza-Bagwell; step-daughter Krista Vasquez (Robert); step-daughter Anna Fennig (Alan); step-daughter Erica Bernal (Gilbert); step-son Roy Padilla; step-grandchildren Mirella Bernal, Darian Taylor, Joshua Taylor, Mishaela Padilla, Miranda Padilla, Victoria Bernal, Odysseus Tannehill, Sebastian Vasquez, Ethan Vasquez, Christian Bernal, and Clementine Vasquez; niece Marie Andreini; niece Elizabeth Green; nephew David Andreini; nephew Russell Andreini; nephew David Bagwell; nephew Daniel Bagwell, nephew Donald Jr Bagwell; and sister-in-law Bonnie Bagwell. He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Anna Bagwell; his brothers, Donald and Robert (Bob) Bagwell; sister Marjorie Bagwell; wife Violet Bagwell; best friend Weldon Lambert; and his cherished dogs, Lucky, Babe, and Buddy. He was an incredible man who lived an incredible life. He was a one-of-a-kind high falutin' New York cowboy. We believe that when Richard was born, God placed a tag on him that read, "Handmade In My Shop With Pride," and now he is back with his maker. You are missed, Richard. You were the love of Mary's life and will live in her heart for always. We love you. Visitation will be held at Resthaven Park Mortuary on Monday, April 19 at 8:30 a.m. 4310 E.
