He married Mary Catherine Sperin, daughter of Nicholas Sperin and Elizabeth Gilbert, on 30 January 1868 at Cherokee County, Georgia.2 Josiah Patillo Bagwell and Mary Catherine Sperin lived in 1900 in Civil District 5, Bradley County, Tennessee. J.P Bagwell well known and beloved citizen of Pontotoc and Chickasaw counties passed away Wednesday Dec 9 at 2 o'clock a.m. at the home of his daughter Mrs. J.J. Munlin of Houlka MS. He was born Nov 22 1855.
Mr Bagwell was a member of Liberty Baptist Church for many years. He was a faithful member in his younger days, but has been in bad health for several years and seriously sick for the past two. He will be greatly missed by relatives and friends.
Pallbearers were: Tom Buchanan, Black Gordon, Dewey Gordon, JN Bryant, Loyd Collums.
Funeral services were held at Oak Forrest Cemetery conducted by Rev. RM Holloway and Rev. JW Henry.
Surviving Mr. Bagwell are his children, RE Bagwell, Itha Bagwell, Gilbert Bagwell, Oliver Bagwell, JW Bagwell, Sam Bagwell, Aretemous Bagwell, daughters Mrs. TJ Mulin, and Georgia Dodson. 19 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren four sisters, Saranah Ferguson, Mrs. BF Lowry, Mrs. Joe Gammell and Mrs.BE Holloday. Also a host of nieces and nephews survive.1 He was buried at Oak Forest Cemetery, Randolph, Pontotoc County, Mississippi.1

As of 2 January 1890,her married name was Holbert.2 Alice Ava Bagwell married Hiram Marion Holbert on 2 January 1890 at Bradley County, Tennessee.2 As of 1907,her married name was Spence.3 Alice Ava Bagwell married Levi Lafayette Spence in 1907.3 Alice Ava Bagwell died in May 1960 in Duval County, Florida, at age 84 Alice was one of eight children of Mary Catherine Sperin and Josiah Bagwell. Her siblings included: Lafayette Patillo, Theodocia E, Barnum, Lucy B, Minerva J, Mary, and Christina.

She appeared with her parents and siblings in the 1880 Federal Census of Dug Road, Pickens County, Georgia. The household included: Josiah Bagwell, age 36, born in Georgia to parents from South Carolina, a farmer; Mary C, age 36, born in Georgia to a father from Ireland and a mother from Georgia; Lafatte P, age 11, born in Georgia to parents from Georgia; Theodocia E, age 9; Barnum, age 7; Alice A, age 5; Lucy B, age 2; and a female infant born March 1880.

Alice Bagwell married H M Holbert on January 2, 1898 in Bradley County, Tennessee. In 1900, her parents and siblings were living in Bradley County, Tennessee. Her parents had been married 31 years and had seven living children of eight born. Alice lost her husband in 1900 and her daughter Winnie Mae. She appears in the 1900 Federal Census of Ball Ground, Cherokee County, Georgia with her children and father-in-law. The household included: Alice A Holbert, age 24, born January 1876, widowed, born in Georgia to parents from Georgia; Henry G, age 1, born October 1898 in Georgia; Winnie W, age 6/12, born November 1899 in Georgia; and Jacob Holbert, age 74, born March 1826 in North Carolina to parents from North Carolina, a farmer who owns his farm.

In 1907, she married Levi L Spence and by 1910, she and Levi had a two year old son. They appeared in the 1910 Federal Census of Ball Ground, Cherokee County, Georgia. Their household included: Levi L Spence, age 53, married twice, currently for three years, born in Georgia to a father from Georgia and a mother from South Carolina, a post master; Alice A, age 33, married twice, currently for three years, two living children of three born, assistant post mistress; Grady, age 11; and Hermon J, age 2.

Alice was appointed postmaster of Ball Ground on February 20, 1922. Her husband had served as postmaster since 1907. Alice served until June 1926.

Alice remained in Ball Ground until the 1940's. In 1940, she was living there with her 32 year old son, Herman J Spence, who was a lawyer in private practice. By 1945, she and her son Herman and his wife were living in Pinellas County, Florida.1
She was buried at H. Warren Smith Memorial Cemetery, Jacksonville Beach, Duval County, Florida.1
