Lilly M. Newman-Bagwell was born on July 7, 1935 in Camden, South Carolina to James Frank Newman and Rosa Jackson-Newman. She was the eldest daughter of seven children.

As a child Lilly was an avid reader and was known for reading books under the covers at night with a flashlight.

At the age of 16, Lilly's mother passed. She was confronted with the responsibility of helping herself and her siblings carry on.

Lilly saw education as the means to self-improvement and empowerment. She had a deep desire for others to be well and able to pursue their individual goals in life. Her professional journey started as a dental assistant. She rose rapidly to a supervisory position but realized that she needed to do more to help others achieve improved dental health care.

Lilly was able to pursue her educational and career endeavours while being a full time mother and wife. In 1970, she obtained from New York City Community College her Associate's degree in Dental Hygiene Education and her license to practice dental hygiene in New York State. She was hired by the N.E.N.A. Health Center to assist the dental director in organizing and establishing a dental clinic.

To augment her management skills, she enrolled in the Dental Health Education Program at New York University. In 1976, she obtained a Master's degree in Community Health. Lilly wanted to impact the quality of health care.

She turned to teaching on the university level. For six years, she directed the Dental Assistant Program at UMDNJ School of Health Related Professions. She taught dental hygiene at Fairleigh Dickerson University and Bergen Community College and clinical dental hygiene at Hostos Community College and New York University. In addition, from 1981 - 1996, Lilly was a Dental Health Consultant in Region II Heads Start Programs.

In 1989, Lilly became a dental hygiene educator at Goldwater Memorial Hospital. She developed the Dental Hygiene Student Externship Program at the hospital's nursing facility in which students learned how to work with elderly nursing home patients with dignity and caring in their attitudes and demeanor toward the patients.

In 1999, the program was extended to include Coler Memorial Hospital Nursing Facility. In June of that year, Lilly obtained her doctorate degree from NYU in health education. Lilly was a member of the New York State Board for Dentistry, the North East Regional Board of Dental Examiners, the American Association of Dental Examiners, the American Association of Dental Schools, NYS Dental Hygiene Educators Association, and the American Association of Public Health Dentistry. She loved to do crossword puzzles and travel abroad. Her favorite place was the Toulouse countryside in the south of France, where she found serenity and tranquility in the rolling hills peppered with golden yellow sunflowers.

She could be caught on any given day humming tunes from the Edwin Hawkins Singers and Roberta Flack to Prince's "Purple Rain". Her key expression was "Don't you bring me no bad news" from the Wiz. Her favorite video game was solitaire. Lilly was a devout Christian. For over 30 years she passionately taught Sunday School in the Episcopal church.

On Thursday, May 19, 2011, she lost her fight with leukemia. Her passing is a profound loss to us all but we gain comfort knowing that she is finally at peace.

She will be missed by her husband, Edward, her children, Nelson, Sharon, Dorinda and Kadesha, their spouses, her grandchildren Michael, Quincy, Alexandrea, Sherod, Shaniqua, Brian, Cassandra, Heather, Justine, Blue, Storm, Blaze and Violette, who affectionately called her "GG", great-grandchildren, her sisters, Willene, Viola and Elisabeth, her brothers, June (deceased), Lee and Troy, and a host of other family members and friends and hundreds of dental students.

She was born on 15 December 1920 in San Jose, Sanata Clara County, California. She was the daughter of Lisle Everett Bagwell and Ada L. Lewis. As of 27 September 1943,her married name was Windsor. Elizabeth Louise Bagwell married Sgt. Michael Henry Windsor on 27 September 1943 at Carson City, Nevada. Elizabeth Louise Bagwell died on 26 August 1987 in Sacramento County, California, at age 66. She was buried at East Lawn Memorial Park, Sacramento, Sacramento County, California.

     Sgt. Michael Henry Windsor was born on 18 March 1920 in Sacramento, Sacramento County, California. He married Elizabeth Louise Bagwell, daughter of Lisle Everett Bagwell and Ada L. Lewis, on 27 September 1943 at Carson City, Nevada. Sgt. Michael Henry Windsor died on 20 October 1973 in Sacramento County, California, at age 53. He was buried on 23 October 1973 at East Lawn Memorial Park, Sacramento, Sacramento County, California.

     Ada L. Lewis was born on 29 March 1893 in Alto Pass, Illinois. As of October 1919,her married name was Bagwill. As of October 1919,her married name was Bagwell. She married Lisle Everett Bagwell, son of Zard Bagwell and Mary E. Drake, in October 1919. Ada L. Lewis died on 1 November 1976 in Sacramento County, California, at age 83. She was buried on 3 November 1976 at East Lawn Memorial Park, Sacramento, Sacramento County, California.

     Ora Lee Sheffield was born on 14 June 1904 in Ozark, Alabama. She married Mardis Smith Bass on 21 September 1918 at Ozark, Alabama. As of circa 1925,her married name was Bass. Ora Lee Sheffield died on 9 May 1972 in Winter Garden, Florida, at age 67.

Theresa Lucille Cook married Joseph Gary Bagwell, son of Joseph Walker Flemming Bagwell and Roxie Lee Taylor, before 1970. Theresa Lucille Cook died on 1 November 2023 in Tupelo, Lee County, Mississippi, at age 79. She was buried at Lebanon Cemetery, Aberdeen, Monroe County, Mississippi.

     Freddie L. Owens was born on 9 February 1938. He married Theresa Lucille Cook after 1962. Freddie L. Owens died on 18 December 1969 at age 31.

He served in the 26th Infantry, Company D, North Carolina for the Confederate States of America during the Civil War. Sidney A. Williams died on 12 July 1862 in Fort Columbus, New York, died of disease as a prisoner of war during the Civil War.
