Joseph Melville Broughton Jr. was born in 1885.1 He was the son of Joseph Melville Broughton and Sallie Harris.1 Joseph Melville Broughton Jr. married Alice Harper Wilson on 14 December 1916.1 Joseph Melville was the Democratic governor of the state of North Carolina from 1941 to 1945. A lawyer by training (and a graduate of Harvard Law School), Broughon worked as a school principal and journalist before actively entering the legal profession. As governor, one of his major legacies was the extension of the public school term from six to nine months. Broughton briefly served in the United States Senate from 1948 to 1949. He died on 6 March 1949 in Bethesda, Montgomery County, Maryland.

Man Drowns When Boat Overturns
Brinkley--- Louis Clayton Bagwell, 52, of England drowned Thursday when his boat overturned while he was fishing in Lake Nicholson 8 miles south of here.
Bagwell and Carroll Covington, also of England, were jumped from the power boat when it struck a snag. Covington told officers he swam to shore and started back for Bagwell but his companion disappeared before he could reach him.
Bagwell's body was recovered about 4 1-2 hours later.
Bagwell, a native of Hot Springs, was a barber and a member of the Landmark Baptist Church.
Survivor's include his widow, Mrs. Mable Munk Bagwell; four sons, Billy Joe Bagwell of North Little Rock, Gerald Bagwell with the Navy at Pearl Harbor and William Bagwell and Robert L. Bagwell of England; three daughters, Mrs. Barbara Harrison of California and Miss Wilma Bagwell and
