Mary Evelyn Church

     Mary Evelyn Church was born on 2 May 1922. Mary Evelyn Church was in the US Navy WAVES as a Petty Office Third Class (PO3C) from from 12 February 1944 to 17 September 1945.

The United States Naval Reserve (Women's Reserve), better known as the WAVES (for Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Service), was the women's branch of the United States Naval Reserve during World War II. It was established on July 21, 1942 by the U.S. Congress and signed into law by President Franklin D. Roosevelt on July 30. This authorized the U.S. Navy to accept women into the Naval Reserve as commissioned officers and at the enlisted level, effective for the duration of the war plus six months. The purpose of the law was to release officers and men for sea duty and replace them with women in shore establishments. Mildred H. McAfee, on leave as president of Wellesley College, became the first director of the WAVES. She was commissioned a lieutenant commander on August 3, 1942, and later promoted to commander and then to captain. As of 28 April 1945,her married name was Bagwell. She married J.W. Bagwell, son of William Cager Bagwell and Mary Edith "Mamie" Cox, on 28 April 1945 at Rockville, Maryland. Mary Evelyn Church died on 6 March 2003 at age 80


A native of Huntsville, AL., Mrs. Bagwell lived in Albany and Sylvester from 1952-1999 and was a retired Civil Service worker at the Marine Corps Logistics Base in Albany. She was an active member of the Sherwood Baptist Church where she attended the Vota Vita Sunday School Class. A veteran of World War II, she served her country proudly in the Navy WAVES stationed in Richmond, Virginia.

Mrs. Bagwell was preceded in death by her husband J. W. Bagwell, her father William T. Church, her mother, Bessie Church, brothers Belvard Church, Frank Church, Brooks Church, Walter Church, and Howard Church, and sisters Goldie Mae Sparks, Bessie Ward, and Juanita Weaver. Survivors include a daughter, Mahala A. Church of Ft. Walton Beach, FL, two sons, Robert W. Bagwell of Albany, and R. Thomas Bagwell of Mobile AL: five grandchildren – Michele Meehan, Christopher Meehan, Amanda Patterson, Richard Bagwell, Andrew Bagwell, and her great granddaughter, Brenna Meehan.

Funeral Monday, March 10, 2003 at 11 AM at Kimbrell-Stern. Interment Crown Hill Cemetery Rev. Tony Haefs officiating. Visitation Sunday 3 PM till 5 PM at Kimbrell-Stern.


She was buried at Crown Hill Cemetery, Albany, Doughtery County, Georgia.
