She lived her final years in Loganville, GA, with her daughter and granddaughter's family. She was employed by S & W Cafeteria until becoming a mother and dedicating her life to her family. She was a charter member of Abernethy United Methodist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband of 47 years, C.J. Setzer, Jr., and two brothers, Robert and John Bagwell.
She is survived by her two daughters, Llinda Kay Yost of Fernandina Beach, FL and Barbara Jo Jones of Atlanta, GA; two brothers, Oliver Bagwell of Raleigh and Marvin Bagwell of Candler; five grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren with one on the way. The family will receive friends from 2:00 to 3:00 p.m. Tuesday at Groce Funeral Home on Patton Avenue with graveside services immediately following at Pisgah View Memorial Park, Candler.1

Ella Jane Bagwell Rice, 91, passed away on Tuesday, September 14, 2021.

An Asheville native, Ella Jane was a daughter of the late Frank Bagwell and Bessie Wyatt Bagwell. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Marel "Red" Rice; daughters, Marlene Jones and Sandra Gail Rice; grandson, Frank Stallings; sisters, Ann Alley and Betty Morris; and brothers, William F. and Jack W. Bagwell.

Mrs. Rice is survived by her daughters, Shirley Godleski (Ted) and Betty Gunter (Larry); son, Marty Rice (Sandra); six grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, and five great-great-grandchildren.

The funeral service for Mrs. Rice will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday at Zion Hill Baptist Church, where Mrs. Rice had been a longtime member. Pastor Bobby Smith will officiate. Her family will receive friends for one hour prior to the service at the church.

Burial will take place the following morning, Monday, September 20, at 10:00 a.m. at Ashelawn Gardens of Memory.

Her family would like to express their appreciation to the staff of CarePartners Solace Center, particularly Karen, Pam, Amanda and Ellen, for the care and compassion shown to Mrs. Rice.



She was buried at Ashelawn Gardens of Memory, Ashveville, Buncombe County, North Carolina.

Reverend Norman Wilson Merrell died on 14 June 2006 in Henderson County, North Carolina, at age 89 Rev. Norman W. Merrell, 89, of Hendersonville, died Wednesday, June 14, 2006, at Beverly Health Care.

A native of Asheville, he was born February 6, 1917, the son of the late James Lester Merrell and Bessie Jackson Merrell.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Eldeva Bagwell Merrell; a daughter, Jean Ivester; three sisters, Ruth Wright, Ethel Murphy and Mildred Lisenbee; one brother-in-law, Rev. Eugene B. Hager.

Rev. Merrell attended High School in the Oakley and Biltmore areas of Asheville. He graduated from Mars Hill College in 1947, Furman University in 49, and Southwestern Baptist Seminary in 55. Pastorates included one in Peizer, S.C., one in Tyler, Texas, while he was a student in the seminary, Lookout Mountain in Lookout Mountain, Tenn., First Baptist, in Huntersville, N.C., and Green Memorial, in Charlotte. Two interim pastorates were Fairview, in Fairview, N.C., and Oak Grove, also in the Fairview community.

Noteworthy of his ministry, he was often an encourager to certain young people to pursue their goals by getting and completing a college education. A tremendous sense of humor often seemed his trademark.

After retirement, and most recently, he served as a Men's Sunday School Class teacher in Zion Baptist church in Braselton, Ga.

He is survived by a sister, Mrs. Dot Sinclair of Fruitland; two granddaughters, Miss Kristi Ivester of Lynchburg, Va., and Keri Johns and husband, Rev. Jeremy Johns of Simpsonville, S.C; four great-grandsons, Eli, Josiah, Sam, and Philip Johns; one great-granddaughter, Maggie Ruth Johns.

Surviving also are several in-laws, Rev. & Mrs. Jack R. Bagwell of Mooresville, Mr. Dan H. Bagwell and Miss Lillie Mae Bagwell of Asheville, Dr. & Mrs. Russell Mercer of Metter, Ga., Dr. & Mrs. Jim Dellinger of Myrtle Beach, S.C., and Mrs. Lou B. Hager of Statesville, N.C.

A memorial service will be held at Hooper's Creek Baptist Church with The Revs. Jeremy D. Johns and Jack R. Bagwell officiating.
