W. Richard Dick Oetgen - SAVANNAH - W. Richard Dick Oetgen, 68, died Sunday, November 17, 2013 at Memorial University Medical Center. He was born in Savannah, son of the late Walter F. Oetgen Jr. and Edith King Oetgen. He was a 1963 graduate of Benedictine Military School and graduated from Newberry College in 1967 with a bachelor's degree in chemistry. Dick began his career with U.S. Plywood in Orangeburg, SC where he did research for two patents. He returned to Savannah to work with Dixie Crystal, Savannah Foodservice (Division of Dixie Crystal), Diamond Crystal Brand, a division of Hormel. When he worked for Savannah Foodservice, he became vice president of operations. He retired in May 2010. Dick was instrumental in three patents listed with the U.S. Patents office during his career. In February 1972 he invented a method for uniforming the color of wood and wood articles, August 1972 the method for ammonical fluorides formaldehyde resin system and August 2005 the disposable condiment shaker and decorative sleeve. He was a member of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of the Ascension, former member of the church council, served as property chairman and instrumental in forming the Carillon Bells of the church that brought joy to people in downtown Savannah. He was a member of the Irish Jasper Greens, Over the Hill Sugar Club and was the first member inducted into the Diamond Crystal Brands Hall of Fame with 34 years of service. Within the packaging industry, he was best known for the design of sugar and salt and pepper packaging. He was also the first customer of Ropak Manufacturing Co., Inc. Dick loved his collection of cars, enjoyed spending time at Lake Murray with his family, loved teaching others, working at his church, very giving and above all, always put others before himself. Surviving are his beloved wife of 46 years, Gaye W. Oetgen, daughters, Gina (Chris) Hazel and Nita (Andy) Martin, grandchildren, Steven Eckert and Hannah Eckert, sister, Susan (Jim) Guard and his beloved sheltie, Chelsea. As of Oct. 10, the coroner’s office said there was an investigation into the crash, which happened at about 2:15 p.m., according to WYFF. The crash was reported on Midway Road near the intersection with Stevens Court.

State troopers said the person accused of hitting Bagwell was in a truck. The truck driver and passenger weren’t hurt in the crash, WYFF reported.

“The victim died as a result of multiple traumatic injuries secondary to blunt force trauma,” the coroner’s office wrote.

S.C. Highway Patrol — which reportedly is one of the agencies investigating the crash — didn’t immediately share additional details with McClatchy News on Oct. 11.

Pelzer - Sgt. Daniel Austin Bagwell, 30, husband of Tonya Pressley Bryant Bagwell, passed away Monday, October 10, 2022.

Born in Anderson County, he was the son of Thomas Donald “Don” and Sandra Gail Bagwell of Pelzer. Daniel was employed with the Anderson City Fire Department and was an honorary member of the West Pelzer Fire Department. He was also the owner and operator of Carolina Land Management and was a member of Whitefield Baptist Church.

In addition to his wife and parents, he is survived by a daughter, Madilynn Rae Bagwell of the home; brother, Michael Bagwell (Samantha Destazio) of Easley; grandmother, Betty Smith of Anderson; father-in-law, Steve Bryant of Belton; and many other loving aunts, uncles, and cousins.

He was predeceased by grandfather, Roy Smith; and grandmother, Edna Bagwell.

Visitation will be held on Thursday, October 13, from 12:00 to 2:00 p.m. at Whitefield Baptist Church. The funeral will follow at 2:00 p.m., with burial at Oaklawn Memorial Gardens.
