     Edwin Hale Mahoney was born on 27 February 1915 in Indiana. He married Ruby Estelle Bagwell, daughter of James Albert Bagwell and Amanda Jane Talton, on 14 February 1935.1 He enlisted as a US Marine on 28 October 1939/. Edwin Hale Mahoney died circa November 1955 He vanished by the St. Joe Michigan River and he was never located. Keys were locked in the car by the road side and he was just gone. His wife at the time, Ruby Estelle (Bagwell) Mahoney, had to wait the allotted time and have him declared legally dead.2

Born in Pickens County, he was a son of the late James Clyde Bagwell and Melonee Clark Bagwell. Mr. Bagwell was a former Detention Officer with Pickens County for 24 years and a member of Morning Star Independent Baptist Church.

Surviving in addition to his wife are daughters, Sharon Powell of Central, Tammy Vaughn of Pickens; son, Joel Bagwell of Pickens; sister, Shelby Jean Mealor of Easley; four grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and six step-great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at noon Saturday, September 1, 2007, in the chapel of Dillard Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Hillcrest Memorial Park, Garden of St. John.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service Saturday, at the funeral home.

He was buried at Hillcrest Memorial Gardens Memorials, Greer, Spartanburg County, South Carolina.

Gladys M. Bagwell Gunter was born on November 12, 1922 in Accomack, Virginia. She was the daughter of the late Charlie B. Bagwell and Viola Roberts Bagwell. Gladys lived and loved life, and her family until she was called home on Thursday January 17, 2019 at Shore Health and Rehabilitation Center in Parksley, Virginia. Gladys attended Accomack County Public Schools. She worked at Whispering Pines Hotel for several years before entering wedlock to William Gunter on July 23, 1951. Shortly after, the couples journey led them North where they made their home in Lakewood, NJ, until Williams timely death. Gladys worked many years at Princeton Avenue School in the culinary department as a cook until her retirement when she returned to her stomping grounds, Bagwell Lane in Accomac, Virginia. Gladys enjoyed cooking fried chicken and corn pudding for her family. Gladys would often become the life of the party when she would cut a rug and dance to the old sounds of Motown. She was preceded in death by her husband; William Gunter, father; Charlie Bagwell, mother; Viola (Roberts) Bagwell, brothers; Rosco, Floyd, George, and Ernest, and sisters; Doris Ann, Thelma, and Oneita. She leaves to cherish her memory; sisters; Arnetta Custis of Tasley, Va, and Betty Collins of Accomac, Va, brothers; Nathaniel (Delores) of Philadelphia, PA, and Donald (Alberta) of Paterson, NJ, 1 sister in law; Patricia Bagwell of Jackson, NJ, and 1 brother in law; Zollie Branch of Paterson, NJ, 1 god daughter; Nancy of Salisbury, MD, a devoted best friend; Roberta Oliver, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.

Arnetta Bagwell Custis was born to Charlie and Viola Bagwell on July 22,1933 in Accomac County, Virginia. She was the 7th child of 12 siblings. Arnetta was educated in the Accomack County public school system then attended the University of Maryland. After graduation, she relocated to Paterson, NJ with her cousins, Mable & Lee Allen.

Shortly after her relocation, she married the love of her life, James “Jimmy” Custis on April 12, 1956. From this union they had 4 children. When she first relocated to Paterson, she worked at Spotless Cleaners. After raising her children, she started working at Fuji Photo for 30 years. After retiring from Fuji Photo she began working as a private Home Health-Aide Caregiver until returning back to Virginia.

Arnetta was preceded in death by her husband, James Custis; her parents, Charlie & Viola Bagwell; 5 sisters and 4 brothers.

She leaves to cherish her memories, 4 children, Theresa Webb, Denise Custis, Darlene Custis all of Paterson, NJ, and Eric (Tonya) Custis of Columbia, SC; 1 goddaugther Wanda Renee (Rosevelt) Foster of Portsmouth, VA; 14 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren, 2 brothers, Billy (Dolores) Bagwell of Philadelphia, PA and Donald (Alberta) Bagwell of Paterson, NJ; 2 special cousins, Bobby (Tanja) Bagwell and Frankie (Tasha) Savage both of Accomack County, VA; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.


She was buried on 16 April 2022 at Wharton Cemetery, Parksley, Accomack County, Virginia.

She was the daughter of Charlie Benjamin Bagwell and Viola Roberts.1 As of after 1954,her married name was Collins. Betty Belle Bagwell married Milton Collins on 10 February 1958. Betty Belle Bagwell lived in 1980 in Accomack County, Virginia. She died on 2 October 2019 in Parksley, Virginia, at age 84


Betty Bagwell Collins was born on April 8, 1935 in Accomack County, Virginia. She was the daughter of the late Charlie B. Bagwell and Viola Roberts Bagwell. Betty lived, loved life, and her family until she was called home Wednesday, October 2, 2019 at Shore Health & Rehabilitation Center in Parksley, Virginia.

Betty attended Accomack County Public Schools. She worked at Whispering Pines Hotel for several years, where she met Milton Collins. Milton and Betty entered into wedlock on February 10, 1958 and she then moved to Onancock, Virginia with Milton and family. Shortly after, Betty began working for Richard & Virginia Hall, Sr., where she worked until 2017. The Halls were her second family, they loved and treated Betty as a member of the family, not an employee.

After the death of Milton, Betty worked hard and then purchased her house on Bagwell Lane with the white fence. She loved her fence because her father Charlie built the fence for her. Betty loved her family near and far. When family and friends would come and visit Accomac, Betty’s house was their first stop and when they departed Accomac, Betty’s house was the last stop. You could always count on a big smile, some food to eat, and some beverages. Betty loved to cook and was famous for her mac-n-cheese and chicken salad. She loved Christmas and New Year’s, because she would vacation in New Jersey with her brother, Donald and sister-in-law, Alberta. She would organize the family reunions and would play her music and dance. Her favorite song, I’ll Take You There by the Staple Singers, would become her family’s anthem. There are so many things Betty did well that would gain the hearts of many. She was loved by many and had many names, such as “Lefty, Big Betty, and Betty Bell.”

She was preceded in death by: husband, Milton Collins; father, Charlie B. Bagwell; mother, Viola Roberts Bagwell; brothers, Rosco, Floyd, George and Ernest; and sisters, Doris Ann, Thelma, Oneita, and Gladys.

She leaves to cherish her memory: sister, Arnetta Custis of Tasley, VA; brothers, Nathaniel (Delores) of Phildelphia, PA and Donald (Alberta) of Paterson, NJ; one sister-in-law, Patricia Bagwell of Jackson, NJ; one brother-in-law, Zollie Branch of Paterson, NJ; and a host of devoted nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.


She was buried at Household of Ruth Cemetery, Accomac, Accomack County, Virginia.
