Hester Bagwell dies August 29 of heart attack

Hester Bagwell, Winona cotton buyer and chairman of the Montgomery County Selective Service board, died at his home in Winona last week of an apparent heart attack. He was 64 years old.

A native of Montgomery County, Mr. Bagwell was a World War II veteran, a member of the American Legion, a Mason, and a member of First Baptist Church.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, August 30, at 3 p.m. at the First Baptist Church in Winona, with the Revs. John Green and John A Wade officiating.

Burial was in Oakwood Cemetery with Oliver Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Louise Bennett Bagwell, Winona; five brothers, Lloyd of Batesville, Curtis of Memphis, Kenneth of Parchman, Jim of West Memphis, Ark., Leonard of Buchanan, Mich; two sisters, Mrs. Rosalee Braswell, Memphis, and Mrs. Roy Stovall, Baton Rouge, La; and several nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers were Harry Simmons, Bobby Hemphill, George E. McDougal, Ellis Hart, Buster Swindoll, and Buddy Shelton.

Died Saturday, Dec. 24, 1994, at 10 p.m. at Baton Rouge General Medical Center. She was 79 and a resident of Baton Rouge. Visiting at Greenoaks Funeral Home chapel, 9595 Florida Blvd., at Cora Drive, 1 p.m. until religious services at 3 p.m. Wednesday, conducted by the Rev. Bill Burrows. Interment in Greenoaks Memorial Park. Survived by a son, Dan R. Stovall; a sister, Rosa Lee Braswell; three brothers, Kenneth, Jim and Curtis Bagwell; and six grandchildren. Preceded in death by husband, RoyStovall; and a daughter, Rita Stovall. AMM2 Charles Alexander Bagwell Jr.1

     AMM2 Charles Alexander Bagwell Jr. was born on 25 November 1916 in Kimichael, Montgomery County, Mississippi. He was the son of Charlie Alexander Bagwell and Nina Bell Love. He served as a Aviation Machinist's Mate Second Class in the US Navy during World War II (USS Mcfarland, location Solomon Islands) - Service Number: 2743504. He was a Purple Heart recipient.1 AMM2 Charles Alexander Bagwell Jr. died on 17 October 1942 at age 25 and was killed in action. Another source listed his date of death as October 16, 1942. He was serving aboard the USS McFarland (USS McFarland (DD-237/AVD-14) was a Clemson-class destroyer) located in the Solomon Islands.

On 16 October, McFarland was unloading cargo and embarking wounded personnel in Lunga Roads when she was attacked by nine dive bombers. While the first seven scored no hits, the eighth hit a gasoline barge in tow alongside the tender’s starboard quarter. The blazing barge was cut loose as the ninth plane made its run. At least one bomb hit McFarland's stern, knocking out her rudder and steering engine. Her crew shot down one plane, but lost eleven of its members in the fight; five killed, six missing, with an additional 12 critically wounded. For this action, the ship was awarded the Presidential Unit Citation.1 He was buried at Manila American Cemetery and Memorial, Manila, National Capital, Philippines.1
