     Commander Wallace Bruce Bagwell was also known as Bruce Wallace Bagwell. He was born on 13 April 1926 in Jackson County, Michigan. He was the son of Ernest Burton Bagwell and Nona Mable Buice. He served in the U.S. Navy. Register listing from 1949 through 1978. He may have served longer.

He served in the USS Shangri-La (CVA-38). The USS Shangri-La was one of 24 Essex-class aircraft carriers completed during or shortly after World War II for the United States Navy. Commissioned in 1944, Shangri-La participated in several campaigns in the Pacific Theater of Operations in World War II, earning two battle stars.

She earned three battle stars for service in the Vietnam War. Commander Wallace Bruce Bagwell married Elise Van Wagenen Taylor on 28 July 1950 at Florida. Commander Wallace Bruce Bagwell and Elise Van Wagenen Taylor lived in 1955 in Pensacola, Florida. “Bags” served as #7/Narrator from 1955-1957, flying the F9F-8 Cougar and F11F Tiger with Bosses Zeke Cormier (#1 ’54-56) and Ed Holley (#1 ’57-58) and a host of colorful characters: Nello Pierozzi, Ken Wallace, Ed McKellar, Lefty Schwartz, Tom Jefferson, and Herb Hunter. - He received a standing ovation from the crowd at the Toronto International Air Exposition for his extemporaneous narration.

When he retired from the Navy, he went to work in banking, beginning in a management class and retired as VP of Operations with Sovran Bank. Within the first two weeks of retirement he was diagnosed with advanced prostate cancer. He survived that and went on to design and enjoy his home in the woods of Fairfax Station. He was married to Elise, the love of his life for 70 years, who passed away last year.

He entered the naval service in Gebraury 1944 under the Navy V-5 Program.

Commander Bagwell received his commission in June 1946 at Duke University. He was assigned to the USS ROYAL (DD-872) for a two year tour of duty as Cimmunication and CIC Officer.

In June of 1949, Commander Bagwell completed the General Line School o at Newport, Rhode Island and entered Flight Training at Pensacola, Florida. After designation as a Navla Aviator in February 1951, Commander Bagwell flew the F4U "Corsair" and the F9F-2 "Panther" in Fighter Squardron 871 and 123. In 1954 he was transferred to Pensacola as an "SNJ" flight instructor until June 1955. Commander Bagwell was then assigned to the "Blue Angles", the Navy's Flight Demonstration Team as their Public Information Officer for two years.
Upon completion of a one year tour as Aide and Flag Lieutenant on COMCARDIV 15 Staff in the Pacific and a two-year tour as Operations Officers, Carrier Air Group FIVE, Commander Bagwell reported to the Bureau of Naval Personnel, Washington, D.C., for a three year tour of shore duty. In November 1963, Commander Bagwell was assigned to VA-43 fro CRAG Training in the A4C "Skyhawk" prior ro reporting to Attack Squardron SIXTY SIX as Executive Officer.
On Paril 23, 1965, Commander Bagwell relieved Commander David L. Hancock as Commanding Officer of Attack Squadreon SIXTY SIX, which he commanded until June 6, 1966. Commander Bagwell underwent CRAG training at VA-44 and VA-174 prior ro reporting to CVW-8 in November 1966. Commander Wallace Bruce Bagwell and Elise Van Wagenen Taylor lived in 1959 in San Diego, California. He was awarded the Bronze Star Medal by the Commander of the Seventh Fleet. His occupation is listed as U.S. Army in 1972. Commander Wallace Bruce Bagwell and Elise Van Wagenen Taylor lived in 1972 in San Diego, San Diego County, California. He was awarded the Legion of Merit by the Secretary of the Navy on 28 June 1977. Commander Wallace Bruce Bagwell died on 8 August 2022 at age 96.
