Dr. Joyce Burris Bagwell, 88, of Summerville South Carolina, wife of the late William Howard Bagwell passed away peacefully with her family at her side on Monday, March 8, 2021.

A funeral service will be held on Saturday, March 13, 2021 at 1 o’clock at Summerville Baptist Church, 417 Central Ave., Summerville, SC 29483. Burial will follow at Dorchester Memorial Gardens, 11000 Dorchester Rd., Summerville, SC 29485.

Joyce was born in Charleston, South Carolina on July 6, 1932. She is survived by her son William Howard Bagwell, Jr. and daughter-in-law Linda Bagwell of Summerville, SC and sister Barbara Weeks of Savannah, GA. She had three grandchildren, Billy (wife Amanda) Bagwell, Kayla (husband David) Kincaid and Cierra (husband Austin) Cartee and four great-grandchildren Brantley and William Bagwell; Addison and Lily Kincaid. In addition to her husband William and parents, she was predeceased by: son, John Bagwell; and brother, Chalmers Eugene Burris, Jr.

Joyce was the daughter of the late Chalmers and Jennie Burris of Charleston, South Carolina along with her sister Barbara. She was active in ADK Honorary Teachers Sorority, the Charleston Woman’s Club, a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution and an active member of Summerville Baptist Church for over 50 years.

She graduated from Meminger High School in Charleston then received her degree from Furman University in 1954. In 1982, she received her master’s degree from Clemson University and her Doctorate Degree from the University of South Carolina in 1992. Most of her 44-year teaching career was at Charleston Southern University and was awarded the Distinguished Professor of Geology. She was bestowed The South Carolina Order of The Palmetto, South Carolina’s highest civilian award, in 1997.

Affectionately known as the “Earthquake Lady,” Joyce headed the Earthquake Preparedness Department at Charleston Southern University, writing and publishing numerous publications about earthquake safety in the Southeast. She monitored seismic activity in South Carolina for the United States Geological Survey for more than 20 years.


She was buried on 13 March 2021 at Dorchester Memorial Gardens, Summerville, South Carolina.

Neetumn G. Bagwell, 88, of Greenville, died Tuesday, July 20, 2004, at Greenville Memorial Hospital.

A native of Henderson County, he was a son of the late John and Ellen Garren Bagwell, and was the husband of the late Homerene Lance Bagwell, who died in 1998.

A U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, he graduated from Christ School in Arden, and attended Spartanburg Methodist College. In 1940, he graduated from Wofford College, and completed his master's degree at Furman University.

A devoted teacher and coach, he retired from the Greenville County School System in 1980, after 31 years of service. He was a member of Piedmont Park United Methodist Church, where he was active in the United Methodist Men and the Friendship Sunday School Class. He was an avid gardener.

Surviving are two brothers, Mahlon "Cotton" Bagwell, of Weaverville, N.C., and Woodfin "Wood" Bagwell, of Asheville, N.C; and many nieces and nephews. He is also survived by two special friends, Ann Thomas and Sandra Bridwell; and his beloved pet, Brindie Bagwell.

Burial will follow at Calvary Episcopal Churchyard. Military graveside honors will be rendered by the Hubert M. Smith American Legion Post #77, Hedrick-Rhodes VFW Post #5206 and Chapter #14 of the DAV.

He was buried at Calvary Episcopal Church Cemetery, Fletcher, Henderson County, North Carolina.

Mrs. Mary Ruth Bagwell Cunningham, 95, of 620 East Howell Street, Hartwell, died Saturday, March 17 at Hartwell Health Care Center.

Born on March 11, 1917 in the Goldmine Community of Hart County GA, she was the daughter of the late James Callie Bagwell and Bertie Pruitt Bagwell. Mrs. Cunningham worked for Hartwell Garment Company, Miss Melba's Kindergarten and retired from the Hart County School System, where she was a paraprofessional at Eagle Grove and Airline Elementary Schools. After retiring, she worked as a Wal-Mart greeter until she retired the second time at age 80. Mrs. Cunningham was a member of the Hartwell First United Methodist Church.

Survivors include her daughter, Linda C. Chipman of Buford GA; her son, Luther M. Cunningham III of Hartwell; her grandson, Luther M. "Marty" Cunningham IV and his wife Kim of Kennesaw GA; four grandsons, Thomas Martin Cunningham of Cabot AR, Erik Perez, Aleks Perez and Markus Perez all of Kennesaw GA and a daughter-in-law, Margaret Bloomberg of Hartwell also survive. Mrs. Cunningham was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, L. M. Cunningham Jr; her son-in-law, Alan D. Chipman; seven brothers, J.C. Bagwell, Thomas Bagwell, Glenn Bagwell, Frank Bagwell, Mac Bagwell, Ralph Bagwell and Hoyt Bagwell and two sisters, Merle B. Snelling and Ina E. Bagwell.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, March 20, 2012 at 3:00 p.m. in the Chapel of the Strickland Funeral Home of Hartwell with Dr. R. Allen Stewart and Rev. Eddie Simmons officiating. Burial will follow in the Nancy Hart Memorial Park.

The body is at the Strickland Funeral Home of Hartwell where the family will receive friends from 1:30-3:00 p.m. Tuesday afternoon. The family is at the home. Flowers optional, memorials may be made to the Hartwell First United Methodist Church Building Fund, 200 East Howell Street, Hartwell, GA 30643.
