M, b. 22 February 1934, d. 20 May 2013
George Fredrick Bagwell was born on 22 February 1934 in Kokomo, Howard County, Indiana.2,3 He was the son of Webster Emmett Bagwell and Dorothy Mae Clark.1,2 George Fredrick Bagwell married Phyllis Joanne Johnson on 25 August 1955.2 George Fredrick Bagwell lived in 1969 in Kokomo, Howard County, Indiana.1 He married Marcia Diane Martin on 24 December 1988 at Kokomo, Howard County, Indiana. George Fredrick Bagwell died on 20 May 2013 at age 79 George Frederick "Fred" Bagwell, 79, passed away Monday, May 20, 2013, at 11:55 pm at his residence, surrounded by his family. He is now at rest with his Heavenly Father whom he loved and served.
Fred was born on February 22, 1934 to the late Emmett and Dorothy (Clark) Bagwell in Kokomo, Indiana. He graduated from Kokomo High School.
In 1952 Fred was inducted into the US Air Force and spent the next four years serving tours of duty in South Korea, where he was Crew Chief for an F84 fighter bomber; and was also stationed at Kinross AFB in Kinross, Michigan. While stationed in Michigan he met and married
his first wife and the mother of his children, Phyllis Johnson. Phyllis preceded him in death. On Christmas Day 1988 he married Marcia (Winslow) Martin, who survives.
Fred was gifted at helping others; always aware of others and their needs. This gift was utilized fully in his career with the Kokomo Fire Department from 1963-1990. Early on in his career he determined to be the best firefighter he could be and that determination led him to retire as District Chief.
After retirement he worked as a realtor for his neighbors, Kevin and Nancy Hardie of The Hardie Group. He enjoyed the many new friends he met and those he was able to help in that marketplace.
Fred was a lifelong member of Morning Star Church. He was honored to serve as Lay Leader; to serve on the Board of Administration; to teach in the Deaf Ministry; to participate in the Darrough Chapel Mentoring Program; and to participate in the Discipleship Ministry
Fred loved everything about his grandchildren and proved it by the time spent with them, the encouragement he gave them, and the knowledge he shared with them. He was known as "Grandpa"- "PawPaw" - "Poppy" -"Pa". He loved each name and responded to
all.
He is survived by daughter, Valerie and her son, Taylor Schoppa of Katy, Texas; son, Vance and his sons, Michael and Blake of Baton Rouge, LA; son and daughter-in-law, Mike and Dr. Laurie and their children, Leigha and Mark, of Lakeland, TN; step-daughter and husband, Leslie and Mike Walden and their children, Jacob, Emily, Grant, Isaac and Asher, of Greentown, Indiana; and step-son and wife, Justin and Joni Martin, and their daughter, Kati, of Greentown, Indiana. He is also survived by brother and sister-in-law, Bob and Zelpha Bagwell of Kokomo, Indiana; and brother and sister-in-law, Russell and Lyndia Bagwell of Kokomo, Indiana; and sister, Marcia Galloway of Kokomo, Indiana. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
Fred was preceded in death by his parents, first wife, and brother, William.
The family would like to thank Dr. Annette Moore and her staff for their care, skill and compassion; a wonderful combination and all found within one medical team. We would also like to thank St. Joseph Hospice, especially Betty Little, for her walk with us through this journey. A warm thanks to Morning Star Church and the people who prayed consistently and extended themselves to our family in so many ways. To our neighbors, who kept our driveway safe in the winter and those who maintained our yard in the spring. Our appreciation is extended to the Union University School of Nursing in Memphis, TN, for lifting us up in prayer. All of these mentioned are examples of the hands and feet of Jesus doing His work on this earth. How blessed we are.
Funeral services will be 1:00pm Thursday at Morning Star Church, 2900 E. Markland Ave., Kokomo, with Pastor Greg Reed and Fred's father-in-law, Rev. Verl Winslow officiating. Burial will follow in Albright Cemetery with military rites provided by the US Air Force and the Kokomo VFW Military Rites Team.3 He was buried at Albright Cemetery, Kokomo, Howard County, Indiana.3
