Ronald Perry Bagwell, Sr. entered into his eternal rest on Tuesday, February 03, 2026. Born in Greenwood, SC on January 18, 1954 to Joseph Leo Bagwell and Mary Betty Johnson Bagwell, the family then moved to Augusta, GA when Perry was still a young child. He was the oldest of 3 sons.
The funeral arrangements are being handled by Chance & Hydrick with the visitation to be held Monday, February 16, 2026 from 5 P.M. to 7 P.M. The funeral service will be Tuesday, February 17, 2026 at noon in the Chapel at Chance & Hydrick and the family will receive friends and family one hour prior to the service. Interment will follow immediately after at Hephzibah Vance Memorial Cemetery. Pallbearers are Joseph Bagwell, Joseph Hall, William Hooker, Jr., Guy Quattlebaum, Luke Quattlebaum, and Cody Goodman. Honorary pallbearers are Danny Hooker, Sr. and Andy Cromer.
Due to his father's military career, the family resided in multiple locations but Perry graduated from Hephzibah High School in 1973 after helping the Rebels win the 1972 State Baseball Championship which remains the only men's State Championship title held by the Rebels to this day. Upon graduating, he was offered multiple sports scholarships by various colleges and chose to attend Brewton Parker College. In 1976 he followed in his father's and grandfather's footsteps and joined the army. After enlisting at Fort Jackson, he was stationed at Fort Gordon but was deployed twice to Germany and once to Turkey. After returning from Germany the second time with his family, he was stationed at Fort Riley, KS. From there he was deployed to Saudi Arabia and Iraq during Operation Desert Storm. During that conflict, he became a Purple Heart recipient due to being severely injured. He then finished his active military career in Fort Riley, KS and retired as a First Sergeant upon which he returned home to Augusta, GA where he lived out the remainder of his days.
He is preceded in death by his mother, Mary Betty Johnson Bagwell; his father, Joseph Leo Bagwell; his step-mother, Shirley Black Bagwell; and his younger brother, Samuel Leo Bagwell. Left to cherish his memory is his wife, Carolyn Mims Bagwell; his children Ronald Perry Bagwell, Jr., Joshua Heath Bagwell, Kayla (Joseph) Hall, Bill (Julie) Quattlebaum, and Cathy (David) Hough; and his grandchildren Connor, Silas, C.J., Guy, Luke, Eve, Eden, and Eli along with extended family and many friends.
Perry excelled at all things outdoors and sports and continued playing baseball throughout college and on into the military. He played in a couple of church leagues, coached several women's teams, and enjoyed coaching his sons and their friends during their baseball days. He was never happier than when he was out hunting, fishing, or watching a favorite western. He was a faithful and loyal friend and took many a person under his wing to care for.
